Young Lives - An International Study of Childhood Poverty

Young Lives - An International Study of Childhood Poverty In each country, the study is divided into two age groups: 2,000 young people born in 2001 (the Younger Cohort) and 1,000 born in 1994 (the Older Cohort).

Young Lives is an international longitudinal study of poverty and inequality following the lives of 12,000 children in Ethiopia, India (in the states of Andhra Pradesh and Telangana), Peru and Vietnam since 2002. Its aim is to shed light on the drivers and impacts of child poverty, and generate evidence to help policymakers design programmes that make a real difference to poor children and their f

amilies. Young Lives is a collaborative research project coordinated by a team based at the University of Oxford led by Dr Marta Favara. Our research partners in each study country represent a range of government, independent and academic institutions.

CYW-RPF Quarterly Newsletter - FGM/C and Child Marriage

Ethiopia has made significant strides in reducing child marriage and FGM/C, but new research warns that progress is fragile and under threat.

Young Lives Ethiopia study tracking 3,000 young Ethiopians over two decades reveals how overlapping crises are reshaping, and in some cases reversing, hard-won gains:
✂️ FGM/C persists in rural communities as a deeply ingrained social norm, driven by expectations of purity and marriage preparation, regardless of a family's wealth or education

💍 Economic hardship is making formal marriage increasingly unaffordable, pushing more young people into informal unions that leave women without legal protection

⚔️ In conflict-affected areas like Tigray, early marriage is being used as a perceived survival strategy, a deeply troubling trend

👩‍👧 The rise of informal unions and cohabitation is leaving single mothers particularly vulnerable to economic instability and social exclusion

Protecting Ethiopia's girls requires engaging whole communities, men, boys, religious leaders, and mothers-in-law, and tackling the root causes that keep these traditions alive.

🌍 Today marks the first day of the climate negotiations in Bonn — a critical moment on the road to in 2027 and the future of the (GGA).

As Parties continue to shape the implementation of the GGA, one message from multiple Parties during the COP30 negotiations was very clear: ensuring children and youth are prioritised, including through gender and age disaggregation of data.

Young Lives, alongside colleagues at UNICEF, UNFPA, Save the Children International and YOUNGO, is proud to be at the forefront of efforts to put children and youth at the heart of the . Our latest joint policy brief, ‘Operationalizing the Global Goal on Adaptation with a Child-Responsive and Youth-Inclusive Lens at SB64’ sets out recommendations to clarify roles, responsibilities and mandates for taking this work forward.

Fantastic to see a new World Bank Group report, drawing on Young Lives longitudinal data, highlighting how homes, neighbourhoods and workplaces shape human capital, future opportunities and economic growth.

The report showcases more than two decades of Young Lives’ evidence showing that, without timely, evidence-based interventions, early disadvantages such as poverty, poor nutrition and little or no access to quality education can have lasting effects on a child’s learning, skills development and future life chances.

🌍 New impact case study highlights how Young Lives’ longitudinal evidence is helping put children and young people at the heart of climate adaptation and social protection policy.

Drawing on unique longitudinal research, Young Lives has generated vital evidence on the long-term and intergenerational impacts of early exposure to climate shocks on children and young people's development—and what can be done to mitigate them. Its collaborative work with UNICEF and Save the Children International in is helping ensure that the needs and vulnerabilities of children and young people are central in global climate adaptation policy.

The study regularly disseminates policy-relevant evidence on how gender-responsive social protection can help address the negative effects of climate shocks and reduce their unequal impacts—particularly on adolescent girls and young women who are often disadvantaged in education and employment opportunities. This includes contributing longitudinal data to inform the development of the new Gender Action Plan adopted at COP30.

📖 Ahead of the climate negotiations in Bonn next week, read the full Impact Case Study and discover how Young Lives' evidence on the role of social protection in mitigating the effects of early exposure to climate shocks in vulnerable communities is shaping climate and social protection policy.
