According to the Aristotelian definition, metaphysics is the science that studies ‘being as such’ or ‘the first causes of things’ or ‘the things that do not change’. From the 17th century, metaphysics began to be a catch-all category for philosophical problems that could not be classified as other branches of philosophy. Contemporary metaphysics includes the original problems (the relationship bet
ween existence and being, the categories of being and universals) and new problems as space and time, modality, causation, determinism and free will, the distinction between mental and physical, etc. If metaphysics is so broadly understood a possible question is: what is the task of metaphysics? Sider, the task of metaphysics is to “explain the world” in terms of its fundamental structure. With this in mind, the Oxford Society of Metaphysics aims to promote interdisciplinary events (introductory courses, seminars, workshops, and lectures) with high-profile experts for undergraduate and graduate students in different disciplines. The society has been created to invite students’ research on the foundational aspects of their own discipline, with its highest goal being to stimulate interdisciplinary collaborations at different levels.
