4th Oxford Scouts are back from a week camping in North Wales. We've slept in tents, roasted marshmallows on fires, walked to the top of Snowdon/Yr Wyddfa, explored underground caves, been rock climbing, paddled rafts across a lake, visited Chester zoo, hunted treasure in Conwy with fish and chips on the quaside, seen Aber Falls, and too much more to mention... big thanks to the volunteers who made this happen, and to all the young people who make it such fun.

Our Scouts were camping last weekend, sleeping outdoors, cooking their own food and chatting around a log fire. They also built this wooden bridge, and tried climbing and abseiling.

Some of our leaders are qualified to lead adventurous activities such as the climbing last weekend, kayaking, rafting and hill walking - we have an exciting summer planned with all these activities.

Our other sections have also been camping: Beavers had an undersea camp, some of the Cubs camped in March, our leaders ran Bronze and Silver Duke of Edinburgh Award expeditions for the Explorers over the Easter holidays.

We have more camps planned too, with the whole group at Youlbury in May (with 800 other scouts), all the Cubs for a whole weekend in July, and week-long summer camps planned for N Wales (Scouts) and the Isle of Wight (Explorers).

Lots of pancake cooking every night last week… the Cubs made stoves out of tin cans for mini-pancakes cooked on the flat top surface (heated by a tea light inside), Beavers had help cooking on Trangia backpacking stoves, and the Scouts did it all themselves outdoors on the Trangias (plus lots of hot chocolate to keep warm!).

Two teams of our Scouts entered the Oxford Spires Scout District Cooking Competition over half term, they had to cook a three-course meal from ingredients revealed at the start of the Sunday afternoon session. Our teams shared 1st place for teamwork, 1st place for the main course (spiced breaded chicken with rice, mushrooms and peppers), and 3rd place overall. Well done Scouts!

Last week small groups of our Cubs on Monday and Wednesday completed several Lego challenges: building a bridge (see the pics), building and racing a car, building a Lego zipline (from the ceiling to the leg of a chair), and a speed build challenge working in pairs with the builder wearing a blindfold and receiving instructions from another Cub. Lots of fun was had by the Cubs, leaders and other helpers!
