☕️ We were delighted to welcome the Mayor of Thatcham, Cllr Mark Lillycrop, and his Mayoress, Jenny Lillycrop, to the Nature Memories Café at The Nature Discovery Centre!

They joined our regular attendees in making leaf and flower imprints in clay discs 🍃

The Nature Memories Café provides a supportive space for West Berkshire residents living with dementia, together with their loved ones and carers.

The free drop-in sessions are run by staff and volunteers who are on-hand to welcome and chat with guests, and help them with nature-themed crafts and activities.

👉 New attendees are welcome and should contact the Nature Discovery Centre - [email protected] or 01635 874381

🦉 We're thrilled that six barn owl chicks were ringed at one of our nature reserves on the Upper Ray Meadows!

This is the first time in several years that we've recorded barn owls breeding on the site.

All of the box checks and ringing are performed under license by the Bucks Owl & Raptor Group (BORG)

June is the time to see baby birds! Especially as juveniles continue to be fed by their parents shortly after fledging.

Our Head of Finance, Rachel Powell, recently spotted this hungry young robin in her garden.

🐝 Think this is a hornet? Guess again!

This black-and-yellow beauty is actually a type of clearwing moth, perhaps unsurprisingly given the common name 'hornet moth'.

Moths can be fantastic mimics, and the hornet moth has evolved its striking colouration as a way to ward off potential predators.

📸 This photo was taken by Graham Breadmore, a key volunteer at Loddon Nature Reserve in Berkshire, and it is only his second sighting of this species at the reserve!

Nightjars migrate to the UK every year from sub-Saharan Africa to breed. They’re here from May to September and the best time to see – or more likely hear – them is now.

The birds are most active at dusk, when they catch flying insects in mid-air. The male nightjars call for mates by churring loudly from the tops of trees.

You can hear this otherworldly sound at several of our Berkshire heathlands, such as Greenham Common, Snelsmore Common and Wildmoor Heath.

🪺 The wrens at College Lake Nature Reserve have taken to nesting in unusual places!

Males wrens will make several nests for his partner to inspect in turn, before she chooses one to furnish with feathers to lay her eggs.

The male's efforts don't go to waste, however, as he will often court another partner or two to raise broods for him in the other nests!

💙🧡 We were thrilled to hear that kingfishers are nesting again at Waterstock Local Wildlife Site in Oxfordshire, and even reusing their nest from last year!

Thank you to Henry Manisty for sharing his fantastic trailcam footage with us.
