Annenberg Inclusion Initiative

Annenberg Inclusion Initiative The Annenberg Inclusion Initiative is the leading think tank studying diversity in entertainment. We work in four specific areas:

1.

The MDSCI engages in programmatic research, education, and advocacy in pursuit of its vision. Examine on screen portrayals of females, people of color, LGBT-identified characters in film and television.

2. Assess behind-the-camera employment patters for women and underrepresented racial.ethnic groups.

3. Conduct qualitative research on barriers ad opportunities facing

filmmakers from marginalized communities.

4. Evaluate economic performance of films based on cast and behind-the-camera diversity.

Congratulations to the 8 Proof of Concept Accelerator awardees! With the support of Netflix (), each participant will receive $50,000 to support a short film that will serve as a “proof of concept” for a larger scale project. The participants will also be mentored by industry experts and their films will be screened at a showcase.

“We built this program to provide tangible support for filmmakers whose work might otherwise be overlooked, and to create space for their ideas to evolve. By investing in their projects and supporting their creative development, we are working to expand access and ensure that more inclusive, dynamic storytelling reaches audiences,” said Cate Blanchett and Coco Francini (), who founded the program with Dr. Stacy L. Smith ().

Full details on the program and recipients can be found at www.pocaccelerator.org or at the link in our bio.

Netflix’s “Remarkably Bright Creatures” brings Tova’s story to the screen: a portrait of grief, aging, memory, and unexpected connection led by Sally Field () & directed by Olivia Newman (). The Annenberg Inclusion Initiative first encountered Newman through Lunafest, where her short film “First Match” was selected for the festival, part of our research documenting how short films can serve as critical entry points for women directors

At a time when women-led and women-made films remain unevenly represented, Newman’s journey is a reminder that progress is built through visibility, investment, and a wider commitment to whose stories get centered.

The film is out now only on Netflix.

A round of applause for our 2026 Icon Award recipient, Cynthia Erivo () 👏✨

From a powerful conversation at the University of Oxford () to launching real opportunities for the next generation, this moment reflected a commitment to lasting impact.

Joined by Dr. Stacy L. Smith, the conversation explored storytelling, creativity, and what it means to use your voice with intention.

Through newly announced scholarships and bursaries supporting students at & Oxford, this work continues to expand careers across entertainment. We are so grateful to everyone who joined us. Thank you for being here 🫧
