Wychwood Warriors We are the Oxford University Historical Re-enactment Society, also known as the Wychwood Warriors. We welcome members of any gender, background or faith.

We re-enact Anglo-Saxon and Viking life and warfare around 900 - 1000 AD. Q) Who can join, and are there any restrictions on who can do what? A) Anybody can join who has an interest in recreating life in early mediaeval Britain. We are opposed to all forms of discrimination; everything is for everybody. Disability may limit the activities that are safe and enjoyable, but we will work with any member to try to maximise their involvement.

Wes hál! Here elaborates the tale of our brave Wychwooders at the annual Battle of Hastings. Throughout the day we contemplated boardgames before the battle, re-created the 11th century through living history displays, caught up with friends from near and far, and fearlessly faced the Norman advances against our shield wall. Although we didn't quite manage to beat the pesky Normans this time around, we'll certainly be victorious at our next meeting!

“Hi, I’m Kathryn, a 3rd year DPhil Student in English studying Early Modern recipe books. I’ve been involved in reenactment in Australia doing Tudor mostly before joining Wychwood. The Michaelmas termcard!

Our first session will be a taster to battle practice and Wychwood in general, this Sunday from 1-3 PM in the Jackdaw Lane field. You can try out replica fighting gear, try on historical kit (cloaks!!), chat with members new and returning, and see some of the crafting projects we've been working on lately. Hi, I'm Vlad, a third year Maths & CS student. I initially came to the first battle practice because being able to spar other people with authentic swords is an opportunity that can't be ignored, but after a few sessions I realised there could be a lot more to reenactment, and I found the crafty side of things just as enjoyable and interesting.

Meet the 2026 committee - Secretary

I’m Hannah, a 3rd year at Queens and your secretary. I got into Wychwood because I love the Vikings and Anglo-Saxons and stayed for the community. I especially love our termly fires and feasts, as well as getting to play traditional board games!

We are at the Oxford Freshers' Fair! Come say hi tomorrow or Thursday to discover a bit more about the society and the Early Medieval crafts/armour on display. Our table will be in the North Schools right after the sports section: just look out for the colourful Wychwood banner.

Meet the 2026 committee - Battle Captain

Hi, I'm Jasmine, the Battle Captain in Wychwood. I'm in my second year studying Classical Archeology and Ancient History. I've been involved in reenactment for most of my life so being able to continue with it at university has been amazing. I most enjoy battle practice (shocking, I know), but the termly feasts are a very close second. Hope to see you at BP come October!
