Oxford Hong Kong Public Affairs and Social Services Society OxPASS is a society at Oxford University that aims to raise awareness of political affairs in Hong Kong and to provide social services opportunities.

OxPASS is one of the few student societies at the University of Oxford that places a high emphasis on public affairs and social services. Since our establishment in 2010, we have been organising forums to engage the interest of our peers in contemporary political issues, and have continued to host the Hong Kong Model Legislative Council, our keynote event of the year. On the aspect of social services, we have been collaborating with PASS societies form across the UK to organise service trips and raise money for charities both in the UK and Hong Kong. Through these activities, we hope to broaden our members’ horizons and increase their exposure to different walks of life. Facebook group: https://www.facebook.com/groups/oxford.pass/

OxHKScholars and OxHKPASS jointly present the MT 2021 Virtual Speaker Event.

This speaker event will feature Ms. Vivien Chan. Vivien is a design historian, writer, and imagemaker based in the UK. She is currently a doctoral candidate at University of Nottingham as part of the 'Cultures of Occupation in Twentieth-Century Asia' project led by Dr. Jeremy Taylor, working on her ongoing PhD thesis titled “A Colony of Shopkeepers”: Spaces of Consumption in New Towns public housing estates, Hong Kong, 1945-1989. She is also currently a lecturer in design research at Nottingham Trent University, and has guest lectured at Royal College of Art and Kingston School of Art.

Guiding us through a historical lens to explore the evolution of Hong Kong’s charm, Vivien will speak about the making the modern 'wet market' in Hong Kong New Towns public housing estates: Order, consumption, and the materiality of 'wetness'.
