A final reminder to join us this Sunday 21st June to celebrate the solstice with a summer market. Head to 1 Aristotle Lane, Oxford between 11am and 3pm.

Buy arts and crafts from local makers, get sustainability info, and grab a drink at The Anchor or have a wander down to Port Meadow after. If you can think of a dreamier Sunday in Oxford, we'd love to hear about it!

Our next episode of Glimpses of a Possible Future is live, this one with Natty Mark Samuels, who talks about his work in The Leys, with projects such as The African School and Leys Astronomy Club.

“I’m very much into bringing education to where the community gathers, so it’s been great for me to be able to use local spaces.”

It’s Great Big Green Week, so it’s the perfect time to delve into the stories of those working toward a more sustainable future in Oxfordshire. In the latest episode of our podcast, we talk to Adrian Sell of Oxford Wood Recycling.

The organisation not only does an amazing job reducing construction waste and giving it a chance to go to good use in other projects, but it also builds community in the Caldicott area. Through the Community Shed, Wood-to-Work programme, and youth initiatives, Oxford Wood Recycling is way more than just a place to source some preloved timber.

“It's often people who've lost confidence or don't have good qualifications and experience. They can come in and be in the woodshop in a very supportive, friendly, welcoming environment, develop their skills, rebuild their confidence and get support to apply for jobs and employment opportunities.”

Listen to all this and more in our conversation with Adrian. See our bio for links or search “Glimpses of a Possible Future” on your podcast platform of choice.

Many thanks to OSEP CIC for their support in funding this project and to In-Spire Sounds for recording and editing.

We recently ran a clay plastering workshop at our 9 Park End Street hub with Oxford Eco-Urbanism and The Roundhouse Company, and Makespace resident Luke Deverill from Tack Creative was there to capture the day.

We'll let the video speak for itself, but want to give a shout out to former New Projects Manager Alex Lui for making this happen before moving on to his new role 🙌

Just over a month has passed since our session at Marmalade, but we haven't packed it away and forgotten about it. We're still looking at the key learnings and working out how to put those into action.

One of the interesting things mentioned again and again in the panel discussion and breakout session was the idea of coming together over food. We didn't expect this to get so much airtime, but it makes total sense.

This is why we have a monthly gathering for all our residents called the Common Pot where we collectively make and eat a meal. It's why spaces like Lula's Ethiopian Cuisine in our hub The Community Works and Down to Earth at The Old Stables are so successful at bringing people together.

Getting everyone in the room might only be the first step, but it can lead to important connections and bigger things happening. Changing our neighbourhoods for the better might happen over injera and a slice of vegan cake.
