This World Refugee Day, we are thinking about the right to seek safety and what safety really means.

At Opportunity, we are proud to work with refugees in Uganda as they try to rebuild their lives.

Furaha fled the war in the Democratic Republic of the Congo and now lives in Rwamwanja, Uganda. She runs a business selling African wax prints, keeps livestock, and supports her family through everything she earns. Through financial literacy training, loans and her savings group, she has been able to budget differently, grow her business, improve what her children eat, and begin building a more stable future.

But Uganda is now hosting more than 2 million refugees, many of whom have fled conflict and instability in neighbouring countries such as South Sudan and the Democratic Republic of the Congo. In places like Nakivale and Rwamwanja, the pressure on land, food and livelihoods is growing. By empowering women like Ruth to earn, save, and plan for the future, we can help families cope better and create more stability over time, little by little.

Being able to save safely should not depend on where you live.

For many of us, saving money is ordinary. For many women in rural communities across sub-Saharan Africa, it is still much harder than it should be.

Safe, formal banking is not always easy to access. That is why Opportunity supports community savings groups, helping women save regularly, borrow when needed, and build more financial security over time.

What does that look like in reality? It can mean being better able to cover school costs, having the confidence to invest in a business, or simply to better cope when life becomes more difficult.

After Cyclone Freddy damaged her crops, Patricia worked with Opportunity to learn new techniques to protect her land and is now mentoring other women as they build their own livelihoods.

💰 Could you manage your life without a bank account?

This month, our Growing Her Future campaign is focusing on Growing Her Finances, helping women access the financial tools, training and support many of us use every day without thinking.

For many of us, banking is part of everyday life. We check our balance, move money, save for something important, or apply for credit when we need to.

For many women in sub-Saharan Africa, it is a very different reality. Nearly half do not have a bank account at all, making it harder to save safely, receive payments, borrow, or plan ahead.

Through Growing Her Finances, Opportunity works with banks and local savings groups so women can begin accessing financial services, sometimes for the first time.

We also provide practical training to help women manage income, separate business money from household money, save regularly and borrow in a way that supports their goals.

These steps may sound simple, but they can make daily life more stable. They can help a woman prepare for an unexpected cost, invest in seeds or stock, grow a small business, and have more say in decisions about her future.

📖Opportunity Reads is our monthly book recommendation series, where members of our Opportunity network share books they’ve been enjoying and why they stayed with them. The months book is Unbowed by .

In this month’s Opportunity Reads, Brigitta Falcini-Dyson shares why Wangari Maathai’s autobiography stayed with her.

Unbowed is the story of a remarkable woman who fought to protect the environment, challenge injustice, and encourage independence and self-reliance among Kenyan women.

For Brigitta, it is also a powerful reminder that women are resourceful and innovative, and that with the right tools, access and education, they can build lasting change in their communities.

What does impact actually look like?

Sometimes it looks like fuller harvests, families eating better, and parents feeling more confident about the future. Sometimes it looks like someone learning how to manage money for the first time, opening a savings account, or gaining the skills to grow a business.

Last year, we trained 21,000 farmers in Rwanda to improve their farms and increase their income. We trained 28,000 refugees, parents and caregivers in Uganda in finance, helping them manage money with more confidence and build more secure futures. And we supported 6,300 farmers in Malawi to adopt new techniques that can strengthen harvests and protect livelihoods when climate shocks hit. We are also proud that 75% of our clients last year were women, who still too often face barriers to training, finance and opportunity.

Felicia is a farmer, wife and mother of three in Rwanda.

For a long time, she worked hard on her farm but could only grow enough to feed her family. She did not have the means to invest in her land, and her husband was the sole earner in the household.

That began to change when Felicia joined a farming cooperative. Opportunity provided Felicia and her cooperative with training in agriculture and finance, as well as access to loans and savings. She was then able to invest in her farm, buy livestock and grow more.

Now, Felicia has surplus produce to sell, her children are eating more nutritious meals, and she is confident using financial services and managing her money wisely. She is also now President of her cooperative, passing on what she has learnt to other women in her community.

As Felicia puts it:
“Now, I can do anything.”

A woman saves a little money each week with her community savings group.

At first, it might not look like much. But over time, it can mean school costs covered, food in the house, stock for a market stall, or a bit of breathing room when something goes wrong.

That is how a lot of change begins, not all at once, but bit by bit, with people building what they can from what they have. It’s real change, built from the ground up.

📸 Women gathered at a Village Savings and Loan Association meeting. A VSLA is a community savings group where members save together, build shared funds, and can take small loans from the group when needed.

🥳Thank you to everyone who listened to, shared and donated to our BBC Radio 4 Appeal.

Our appeal shared Amama’s story, but she is one of many women whose future can change when the right support is in place.

For women working as kayayei in Ghana, Opportunity’s training programme can offer a route towards safer, more secure work. Women gain practical skills, financial knowledge and confidence to start earning in sustainable and safe ways.

The impact does not stop with one person. Women supported through the programme are building businesses, saving for the future, training others, employing others, and supporting their children’s education.

Thank you for helping make this possible.

Last year in Ghana, Afua Hagan met Amama, whose story is at the heart of our BBC Radio 4 Appeal.

Amama once worked as a kayayei, carrying heavy loads through busy markets for very little pay. Through Opportunity’s training programme, she gained the skills and support to start her own business and move towards a safer, more secure future.

As our appeal draws to a close, there are now just over 24 hours left to donate.

Your gift can help vulnerable young women and girls in Ghana access life-changing training like Amama did, build sustainable livelihoods, and take a vital step towards safety and independence.

Please listen, donate, and help make that opportunity possible. Link in the comments.
