Did you know it takes 2,700 litres of water to make one cotton t-shirt, and 10,000 litres for a pair of jeans? 😳

In the UK we throw away 300,000–350,000 tonnes of clothing every single year β€” and the fashion industry is responsible for around 10% of global carbon emissions.

This September, Sustainable Overton is backing Second Hand September πŸ‘•β™»οΈ β€” a simple challenge from Oxfam: for 30 days, only buy pre-loved clothes, and donate what you no longer need.

Will you take part? Find our blog on the website for 5 easy ways to get started .

For anyone frustrated by the lack of kerbside plastic recycling in Overton, we've pulled together some information to help you understand the reasons.
Recycling isn't what happens when we put something in our green bin, but really it is when the waste product is turned into something new, and that just isn't very easy - nor is there much demand for this plastic.
You can help with this by putting plastics into the right bin, reducing what you buy in plastic (thank you The Village Refillery Overton ) and choosing recycled plastic packaging wherever you can.
For more info check out:

If you've ever stood at your kitchen bin holding a yoghurt pot, wondering why it can't go in with your recycling, you're not alone. It's one of the most common frustrations we hear about in Hampshire β€” and it's completely understandable, especially as we all know someone who lives somewhere that t...

A lot of UK homes β€” including plenty in Overton β€” just weren't built with heatwaves in mind. With heat-health alerts in place on and off all summer, staying comfortable (and safe) at home has been its own challenge for a lot of people.

How have you coped with the heat indoors β€” sleeping, keeping cool, keeping older relatives or neighbours okay?
Has anything actually helped?
Do you plan to add air conditioning to your house?
And is there anything in Overton you think we should be planning for when it gets like this - a "cool hub" at the church perhaps?

With the A31 shut and parts of the New Forest closed off after the wildfire, a few of our usual local days out weren't really an option this summer. In addition to that, most of us have quietly shifted daily habits β€” walking the dog earlier, driving less in the afternoon heat, rethinking what "a nice day out" even looks like, prioritising shaded woods over scorching beaches .

Did the wildfire or the heat change your plans this summer β€” whether that's a day trip, a dog walk, or just how easy you found it to walk to the village?
What did you end up doing differently?

Overton sits right at the source of the River Test β€” and Southern Water has named protecting it as a priority as the drought here continues. If you've got a garden, allotment or even a few pots, this summer's probably changed how you've had to manage them.

Did your garden cope?
Have you changed what you water, when you water, or what you even bother planting anymore?
Will you change what you plant next year?
And has anyone found something that's actually worked β€” a plant, a trick, a routine β€” that others in Overton might want to steal?

This summer's been one for the record books β€” the Met Office says 2026 is on track to be the hottest UK summer ever recorded, and we've just watched the A31 close for two weeks after the New Forest wildfire (it's only just reopened).
Closer to home, Overton's had its own share of it too: heat alerts, a hosepipe ban, sports grounds so parched they were featured in the Guardian, dry and dying gardens, a river running low.

We'd love to know: what's this summer actually been like for you, day to day?
Hotter?
Drier?
Different in ways you didn't expect?
Drop a comment below β€” we're really interested to hear from you.
