The workshop will be closed today as we’re away delivering one of our events elsewhere.

It’s always a strange feeling locking up the workshop to head out and share the things we love with people further afield, but every event helps support the work we do here at The Elderwood Project.

We’ll be back open soon with fresh timber, new creations and perhaps a few stories from the road.

Until then, the sawdust can rest for a day.

See you soon.

🌿🪵 NEW WOOD HAS ARRIVED! 🪵🌿

The timber gods have smiled upon us once more.

We’ve had a fresh influx of reclaimed wood arrive at The Elderwood Project in all manner of shapes, sizes and stories. Beams, boards, offcuts, stumps and oddities, each patiently waiting for its second life.

Perhaps a shelf.

Perhaps a workbench.

Perhaps the beginnings of your next grand idea.

Every piece that passes through our doors is another piece saved from landfill and given a chance to become useful, beautiful, or simply interesting once more.

Whether you’re a seasoned woodworker, a DIY enthusiast, or simply enjoy rummaging through piles of timber imagining what could be, we’ve got plenty to choose from.

Pop down and see what treasures have found their way into the workshop this week. You never know what you’ll discover.

🌿 OPEN TODAY (AGAIN…) 🌿

We know, we know…

We said we’d have a day off.

The workshop had other ideas.

After staring out of the window for a while and pretending to relax, we decided we’d rather be surrounded by half-finished projects and the smell of sawdust.

So, The Elderwood Project will be open today until around 2pm.

If you need some wood for a project, fancy a browse around the shop, or simply want to escape the modern world for half an hour, jump in and say hello.

There are commissions being finished, new ideas taking shape on the workbench, and probably a cup of tea brewing somewhere.

Some people go to the beach on their day off.

We apparently come back to the workshop.

As always, if you have unwanted timber gathering dust and taking up space, we’d love to give it a second life. 🪵⚒️🌿

🌲 Calling Local Businesses, Tradespeople & Contractors 🌲

Are you a joiner, kitchen fitter, builder, landscaper, tree surgeon, fencing contractor or local business that regularly ends up with usable timber that would otherwise be skipped, burned or sent to landfill?

The Elderwood Project would like to help.

We’re a local registered charity based in Otley, dedicated to rescuing unwanted timber and giving it a second life through woodworking, education and community projects.

We’re currently looking to work with businesses that want to improve their environmental impact at absolutely no cost to themselves.

As an Elderwood Environmental Partner, you’ll receive:

- A digital Environmental Partner badge for your website and social media and physical stickers/plaques for your shop
- Recognition on our social media channels
- A responsible destination for suitable unwanted timber
- The opportunity to support a local charity and community project
- A simple way to demonstrate your commitment to sustainability

Instead of paying to send usable timber to landfill, help us put it back into the hands of makers, community groups and local people.

If your business regularly has timber, offcuts, reclaimed wood, fencing, decking, beams, shelving or other reusable wood available, we’d love to hear from you.

Together, we can keep more wood in circulation and less in landfill.

Message The Elderwood Project, email us at [email protected], or simply call up to the workshop at Murphy’s Yard, Ellar Ghyll to see for yourself and to find out more.

The workshop is open, the kettle is on, and despite the weather being wetter than a mermaid’s armpit, we’re here making sawdust and questionable decisions.

We’ve got reclaimed timber, interesting offcuts, handmade creations, and a few new projects taking shape on the workbench. If you’ve been meaning to start a project, finish a project, or simply wander around looking at bits of wood while pretending you have a plan, today is as good a day as any.

The rain might be hammering down outside, but it’s warm, dry and smells faintly of timber, coffee and optimism in here.

As always, if you’ve got unwanted wood gathering dust in your garden, garage or workshop, we’d love to give it a second life.

Come and say hello. We don’t bite. Usually. 🪵⚒️🌿

🌲 WE DID IT. 🌲

We are incredibly proud to announce that The Elderwood Project has been awarded £20,000 from The National Lottery Community Fund!

Just four months ago, The Elderwood Project became a registered charity. Since then, we've been rescuing usable timber from landfill, creating a community workshop, running wood workshops, welcoming visitors through our doors and proving that waste wood still has value.

This funding will allow us to take that work even further.

Over the coming months, the funding will help us:

🪵 Rescue even more timber from landfill
🚐 Improve our collection capabilities with an even bigger van
🔨 Expand our workshop facilities
🌱 Support volunteers and community activities
♻️ Increase our environmental impact across the local area

Most importantly, this is not just funding for us. It is an investment in a different way of thinking. One where useful materials are reused rather than wasted, practical skills are shared, and communities work together to create something meaningful rather than just throwing it away!

We would like to thank everyone who has supported us so far. Whether you've donated wood, bought something from us, attended a workshop, shared a post, volunteered your time or simply encouraged us along the way, you have helped make this possible.

And of course, thank you to National Lottery players. This funding exists because of you.

This is only the beginning.

It’s amazing what a few months can do.

When we opened the doors to The Elderwood Project, we had a simple idea. Save good timber from waste, teach traditional skills, and create a welcoming space for people who wanted to make things with their hands.

Since then we’ve met hundreds of wonderful people, collected countless pieces of reclaimed timber, run our first workshops, secured funding, and watched this little community grow far beyond what we ever imagined.

This week alone we’ve welcomed new visitors, received more fantastic reviews, finished commissions, helped craftspeople with their projects and continued building new pieces for the shop.

Every plank saved from landfill. Every workshop attendee. Every customer. Every conversation.

You’re helping build something special.

We’re open today until 4 and always happy to see new faces.

Reclaim. Reuse. Rebuild.

*Note*
Despite Facebook trying its best to label our creations as AI, we PROMISE you what we build is real!

One of the things we love most about The Elderwood Project is meeting skilled craftspeople who are keeping traditional skills alive.

Recently, a fine gentleman called Peter from The Stickery paid us a visit. Peter creates beautiful bespoke walking sticks using animal horn, reclaimed materials and traditional craftsmanship. Every piece is unique and built with genuine care and attention to detail.

Peter asked if we could add some personalised pyrography to a few of his latest creations. We were more than happy to help, and it was a pleasure seeing his reaction when the finished pieces were handed back over. Safe to say he was very happy with the results!

There is something special about craftspeople supporting craftspeople, sharing skills and helping bring each other’s work to life.

If you’re looking for a truly unique walking stick, keep an eye out for The Stickery and Peter’s incredible work.

As for us, we’ll be in the workshop today finishing commissions, working on new creations and helping people find reclaimed timber for their own projects.

We’re open today until 4pm, so feel free to call in and say hello.
