Marketing 101 – Back to basics

Straightforward marketing guidance to help local businesses attract customers without wasting budget

Marketing doesn’t have to be scary—or expensive. In a world of “viral trends” and unsolicited advice from every corner, it’s hard to know where to actually spend your time and money. Should you be on TikTok? Do you need a new website? How do you actually find new customers?

This fully funded workshop, supported by Oswestry BID and Shropshire Growth Hub, is designed to sweep away the confusion. We’re going back to basics to help you identify the high-impact, low-cost marketing activities that actually move the needle for your business.

What We’ll Cover:

We’ve packed the essentials into one productive session to ensure you focus on what works:

- Know Your Audience: Identifying exactly who your customers are and—more importantly—what they need to hear from you.
- The Marketing Mix: Choosing the right activities for your specific business, not just the “latest thing.”
- Digital Foundations: A plain-English guide to websites and SEO.
- Social Media Clarity: The definitive “do’s and don’ts” for professional profiles.
- The Power of PR: How to get seen and build authority in your community.
- Customer Loyalty: Leveraging databases to drive repeat sales and long-term brand fans.
- Smart Spending: How to approach advertising and sponsorship without breaking the bank.
- The Outcome

You won’t leave with a headache; you’ll leave with a simple, one-page marketing plan tailored to your business, giving you a clear roadmap for the months ahead.

Fully Funded: This session is free for local businesses and BID members, but spaces are limited to 20 to ensure a high-quality, interactive environment.

Who should attend

Ideal for local business owners, sole traders and independents who want clear, low‑cost marketing guidance and a simple plan that actually works.

Oswestry Business Networking Event (Tuesday 9th June, 5pm to 6.30pm)

Get ready to mingle, share ideas, and make new connections at the Oswestry Business Networking Event - it's where opportunities await!

Following the success of our well attended forum in February, we are pleased to invite you to our next Employer Forum, designed to build partnerships and developments between local businesses and the college.

Delivered in collaboration with Oswestry BID and Oswestry Life, the event combines a guided tour with interactive roundtable discussions. Building on the previous forum, this session will focus on soft skills, offering employers the chance to hear directly from students about their views on the world of work and future careers.

The evening will also provide valuable time for networking and the opportunity to recognise and celebrate our valued employer patrons.

An Oswestry BID and Oswestry Life event in partnership with North Shropshire College

Oswestry residents invited to help shape the town’s future

Oswestry Town Council is calling on residents, community groups and businesses to get involved in a landmark project that will shape the future of the town for generations to come.

The council has agreed to prepare a Neighbourhood Plan – a community-led document that, once adopted, will carry real legal weight and directly influence planning decisions on homes, businesses, green spaces and more across Oswestry.

Mayor Cllr Jonathan Upton said: “The Neighbourhood Plan will stand as one of the most significant pieces of work the town has undertaken in a generation. This is a genuine opportunity for local people to have a real say in how Oswestry develops, and I would encourage as many people as possible to come along and find out more.”

The plan will be shaped by a Steering Group of community groups and local residents, and the council is looking to recruit members from the community. While the plan will reflect local priorities and ambitions, it will also be subject to independent examination by a planning inspector to ensure it meets national planning requirements – meaning it will be both ambitious for Oswestry and grounded in what is achievable.

The process is expected to take around three years, with a community referendum at the end. If a majority of voters approve it, the plan’s policies will become the legal basis for planning decisions in Oswestry.

The council is hosting a community meeting later this month to launch the project and begin recruiting Steering Group members:

Monday 22 June 2026, 6.30–8.30pm
Hope Church, Market Gate, Oswestry SY11 2NR

Mayor Cllr Jonathan Upton added: “Whether you care about housing, green spaces, transport, or simply the character of your community, this is your chance to act. Don’t miss your chance to help write it.”

All are welcome to attend. Representatives may come on behalf of organisations or businesses that cannot send someone directly.

🤝🍻 Another successful Pubwatch meeting hosted by Oswestry BID.

These meetings provide a valuable opportunity for local hospitality and licensed venues to come together, share concerns, discuss emerging issues, and support one another in maintaining a safe and welcoming night-time economy.

Pubwatch also gives businesses the chance to speak directly with West Mercia Police, helping to strengthen communication, share intelligence, and work collaboratively to tackle issues affecting our town centre.

A big thank you to everyone who attended and contributed to another positive and productive discussion. Together, we can continue to support a safer and more vibrant Oswestry for businesses, residents and visitors alike.

📱✨ Another successful training session delivered!

A huge thank you to everyone who joined our recent Social Media 101 workshop, delivered in partnership with Shropshire Growth Hub and run by Ruth Martin of Martin & Jones Marketing.

The hands-on session helped local businesses learn how to turn social media from simply posting content into a tool that drives real enquiries, customers and sales. From understanding hashtags and tagging to creating engaging content and building a practical social media plan, attendees left with plenty of ideas they can put into action straight away.

It's fantastic to see so many local businesses investing in their skills and taking steps to grow their online presence.

Keep an eye on our channels for details of future business support and training opportunities available through Oswestry BID and our partners.
