This morning Oswestry U3a Walking Group had one of our 'away days' when we do a walk further afield. The 'Precipice Walk' above Dolgellau is for some the highlight of the year. 16 of us met in the car park and leader Phil explained that whist it wasn't a particularly hard or steep route, there were several places where some 'scrambling' over rocky sections would be needed.
The first part of the walk was up a track through some woods and then onto a narrow track that is fairly flat that circles the high ground. We heard cuckoo, skylark and meadow pipit as we walked. The views are spectacular along the whole nearly 4 miles route. Whether it is looking at the hills and mountains or down to the valley and the river. We saw one particular cottage in a lovely setting - Dôl-y-Chlochydd is a holiday rental available for around £1,400 per week in July.
At the end of the hill is a fantastic spot where we had lunch. With a view down the Mawddach estuary to Barmouth in the distance - it was possible to see the railway bridge using a zoom lens. The mountain range of Cader Idris was to our left.
After a group photo we made our way down the path on the other side of the hill. We dropped down to the expanse of the Llyn Cynwch reservoir, a pleasant and peaceful setting. We walked along the bank and back to the car park.
Afterwards we took a trip into Dolgellau and some had an ice cream and others a coffee or beer in a pub.
The weather was perfect for a walk and the group enjoyed plenty of good chat. Thanks to Phil for guiding us and to those who gave lifts to others who needed one.

Oswestry u3a Members enjoyed another excellent Speaker Meeting this week at the Memorial Hall, where we welcomed Alison Utting for her fascinating talk, *“Eglantyne & Ellesmere.”* Introduced by Steve our chair

Through a lively and fully illustrated presentation, Alison brought to life the remarkable story of Eglantyne Jebb, founder of Save the Children, and the extraordinary family who helped shape her life and work. Members were intrigued to learn about Ellesmere’s own ‘Gentleman Jack’, Eglantyne’s brushes with the law, and even the unusual tale of a dog that became part of a newspaper’s editorial team.

Drawing on personal archives, rare photographs and years of research, Alison painted a vivid picture of the Jebb family, their homes, their childhood adventures and the lasting impact they made on society. The stories of Eglantyne and her sister Dorothy, who founded Save the Children in 1919, were particularly inspiring.

Thank you, Alison, for a most interesting and thought-provoking morning, which was greatly enjoyed by all who attended.

Our own Oswestry U3a Ukulele Group 'Ozukes' have made the local press! They are featured in 'The Advertizer' today in an article about their summer of 'gigs'. As well as playing at the national U3a Festival in York, they have been invited to perform at the International Eisteddfod in Llangollen. They finish their summer playing 'Shrewkfest' in August.
The photo was taken last Sunday at one of the twice-weekly practices at St Agatha's church hall in Llanymynech.
The paper missed off Trish at one end and part of Keith at the other! You can see the original photo as well as another taken inside the hall.
Rumour has it that they are also in the Shropshire Star & the 'County Times' so look out for them in there.
Ukulele is just one of many 'interest groups' that are part of our U3a, you can see details of others on our website. https://oswestry.u3asite.uk/

Members of the Oswestry u3a Garden Group enjoyed a very pleasant visit to Wightwick Manor and Gardens this week. Although rain had been forecast, the weather stayed dry throughout our visit, allowing everyone to explore the gardens in comfort. The Group also had time to visit the Mnaor house, which added to the day.

June is a wonderful time to visit Wightwick. The borders were full of fresh colour, early roses were in full bloom, tall foxgloves added height and interest, and the herb beds filled the air with their clean and distinctive scents.

The gardens are a fine example of the Arts and Crafts movement. In 1904, the Mander family commissioned the renowned garden designer Thomas Mawson of Windermere to create the layout. His influence can still be seen today, showing how traditional gardening methods continue to shape and guide the gardens.

As usual, the visit included good company, plenty of conversation, and, of course, a generous amount of cake enjoyed by members during the day.

Our Oswestry u3a Walking Group enjoyed another successful outing today, with 19 walkers taking part in a pleasant walk from Bwlch y Ddar.

Despite a less-than-promising forecast, the weather stayed dry throughout, with some welcome sunny periods along the way. The group covered just over three miles at a relaxed pace, following quiet country lanes and enjoying the wide views across the surrounding countryside.

The gentle route gave everyone plenty of opportunity to chat, take in the scenery, and enjoy good company in the fresh air. It was an enjoyable start to the week and another reminder that walking together is about much more than the miles covered.

Last Saturday afternoon our Chair Steve and Ozukes Group leader Jan organised a 'Flash Mob' at the Market Cross in Oswestry.
At first sight it seemed like a normal sunny Saturday as the good people of the town enjoyed some shopping. A close observer might have noticed a few individuals nearby, standing around with ukuleles in hand.

At 2.30pm Steve stood by the cross and started singing 'A Drop Of Nelson's Blood/Drunken Sailor' on his own. A few others on the seat joined in, with Steve and Ann on percussion. The players who had been standing alone wandered over strumming their instruments, and before long the group was 18 strong.
The shoppers stopped and young children danced then within 10 minutes it was all over... Video in the next post.

Ozukes then walked up Bailey Street to the Coach House pub on Bailey Head for an afternoon of a free concert with 'Ozrocks Choir' and the 'Aging Bulls' rock band, in aid of MND.

This morning nine members of Oswestry U3a Walking Group met at the National Trust car park for the Horseshoe Falls outside Llangollen.
There was a bit of confusion about the route but after a brief discussion we opted to do the 'Llantysilio Church Snowdrop' walk (without the Church or the Snowdrops!).

The 3.5-mile walk started with a short steep section up above Bryntyislio Hall along a narrow lane, which was more overgrown and greener than in February when we came to see the snowdrops. Colourful azalea bushes are out at this time of year.

We came to the junction with the Horseshoe Pass road where there is an unusual sight ...a red telephone box, with a working phone and freshly painted! We joked about how many U3a members we could get in and if all of us might fit. Three of us squeezed in and the others mavelled at it.

After a short section carefully walking along the side of the main road we turned off onto a narrow lane and enjoyed our 'banana break'. Ian even managed to get himself into a selfie for the group photo. Soon after starting again we had to stop and put our raincoats on. The forecast had been for 85% chance of light rain but in the end we only had about 10 minutes the whole time we were out - and it was quite warm too

After turning right in Llantysilio we dropped down past the hall and the church to the path beside the river. We stopped to admire the weir at the falls that feeds the start of the Llangollen Canal and ultimately the Shropshire Union Canal. 12 million gallons a day apparently are extracted from the river.

Two of our number left for a coffee at the Chainbridge Hotel next to the canal and the rest of us climbed the metal steps and bridge over to the the hotel car park, then back to where our cars were parked.

A pleasant morning in good company. Thanks to Sarah for giving a lift from Trefonen and to Clare and Alyson for leading the way.

Oswestry u3a members enjoyed a lively and uplifting morning at the Memorial Hall today with guest speaker Sally Tonge. Sally was introduced, as ever, by our Chair, Steve.

Known as a storyteller, musician, and “Verbal Artist”, Sally shared a wonderful mix of stories, music, rhythm, and humour which had members fully engaged throughout the session. Her warm and interactive style brought words and music together in a very special way, making for a memorable morning enjoyed by all.

Our thanks go to Sally for such an entertaining visit and for sharing her many years of experience with us.
