Our fallow deer fawns have had an upgrade! 🦌

These little fawns have been doing a lot of growing over the past week... Initially being bottle fed by our animal care team, most have now graduated to easing solids are are thoroughly enjoying life! 🥰

As you may have noticed, temperatures have started to closely match the surface of the sun here in the south recently, so these youngsters are now enjoying the space of a much cooler outdoor pen!

They still have a lot of growing left to do (an adult fallow deer can weigh 100kg), but it's always great to see progress being made. ❤

As always, all of this is only possible with your support, so thank you for making this possible!

We have some rather special news for you all today... 🥰🦔

Do you remember the hedgehog that arrived with one of the worst cases of balloon syndrome that we'd ever seen?

❤ SHE'S NOW BACK IN THE WILD!! ❤

It's taken a lot of work over the past month, but it's all worth it to see her take those first few steps as a wild hedgehog once more! For those who don't know, 'balloon syndrome' is a form of subcutaneous emphysema - a condition where air is trapped between the skin and tissues, resulting in a hedgehog that very much resembles a balloon... Not only can it be very painful, but the inflation can prevent almost all movement - only getting worse the more the patient breathes 😣

Luckily, Tom's quick intervention and treatment plan saved her life and, after quite a bit of monitoring to make sure she wasn't going to inflate again, she is heading back to freedom with a much slimmer body than she arrived with! 😅

[P.s. Don't worry, the release photo doesn't use any flash - we hate that with wild animals. It's just a torch set on a really low power setting and a camera that's very good in low light!]

It was very narrow escape for these little rabbit kits... ❤

With their mum missing, their warren had been raided by magpies, leaving their two siblings critically injured. Although our vet team tried their best, the damage done was just too much 💔

Thankfully, these two had escaped major injury, but they were far from out of the woods. Dehydrated, cold, lethargic and hungry, they were clearly missing mum and Alda and Tom set to work trying to stabilise them.

With warmth, fluid therapy and feeding with a special critical recovery solution, they slowly started to come back to us and, by the end of the day, they were looking SO much brighter! 🥰

Now under the care of rabbit orphan feeder, Sally, they are making great progress. It's going to take quite a bit of work, but we hope this lucky pair can return to the wild once fully developed. 🐇🐇

We have a very exciting announcement! 🤩

This weekend, join us in Horndon-On-The-Hill for the annual Horndon on the Hill Feast and Fayre!

We're DELIGHTED to have been chosen as 'charity of the year' this year with a rather appropriate theme of 'back to the wild'. It's is looking to be another amazing year with lots of stalls, food and music to keep everyone happy.

You can even find several of our team members manning stalls around the event - make sure to say hi and ask any questions you may have about our work! ❤

Will we see you there? 👀

This young fox had SUCH a lucky escape! 😫🦊

Brought in to our care by the RSPCA (England & Wales), this poor boy had managed to get a small plastic ring stuck around his neck! We have no idea how long he was wearing his 'necklace', but it was clear that he definitely wanted it removed...

Luckily, the constriction was not tight and vet, Alda, was quickly able to cut the plastic away and free the cub. Sadly, it's not all a happy story as the little ginger terror had managed to damage some of his teeth trying to free himself 😢

For an adult fox, this would be a severe issue but, luckily, this boy had only damaged his deciduous teeth and should make a full recovery!

We are still waiting to see the full extent of the damage and he may still need surgery, but we're quietly hoping he can be fixed up in time to return home to his mum 🥰

If you wanted to support his care and help us rescue more than 11,000 animals each and every year, please donate to our work at https://www.southessexwildlife.org/donate

Ending the week with another patient going back to the wild ❤

We raise more than 7,000 orphaned birds each year here at SEWH, and it's not an easy process! With some needing feeds every 10 minutes from dawn until dusk, it can be an EXHAUSTING task for our staff and volunteers to make sure that everyone gets the exact care they need.

Most bird species can go from the egg to being ready to fledge in just 14 days, and all that hard work is worth it when patients, like this long-tailed tit, can return to freedom!

Thank you, as always, for making all of this possible 🥰

One VERY lucky escape! 😱🦊

We're honestly not quite sure how this happened, but this little fox cub needed our help after getting stuck in a lightwell. Normally, these 'accidents' only involve a few meters of falling but this little cub has to take it one step further...

This poor girl fell MORE THAN TEN METERS!!! 😫

Having crawled behind a panel to hide, it wasn't the easiest of catches for rescuer, Charlotte, but, luckily, the scared ball of orange fur was soon on her way back to the hospital for assessment 🚑

To be honest, we initially feared the worst. Falls from that height can very easily cause fractures and even paralysis, but this is where she produced a second miracle...

SHE WAS ABSOLUTELY FINE!!! 🥹

Not only had she survived the fall with no injuries, she was even well enough to be released back to her family after a brief period of monitoring!

Definitely a lucky little cub! 🦊

If you've ever had something stuck in your eye, you're about to feel VERY sorry for this poor fox! 😢

He arrived with a nasty ulcer to his left eye, with the injury causing so much discomfort that he managed to pull some of his fur out trying to itch it 😖

After assessment, he was quickly started on a course of treatment, medication and eye drops - something that's not as easy as it sounds to deliver! Luckily, he has been a very well-behaved patient so far, but we hope that continues when he starts to feel better...

Please keep all fingers, toes and paws crossed for him... he's going to need all the help he can get for us to save that eye ❤

Today was quite a special day here at SEWH... 🦭

After months of hard work, our final grey seal pup of the season finally got the chance to return to freedom to begin her new life! ❤

Arriving with us all the way back in JANUARY, this little girl has really put our seal team through their paces... Medical complications, aggression and even refusing to learn how to eat fish for herself made her rehabilitation quite tricky, but we're so happy to see her finally take the last 'steps' to freedom! 🥰

Raising grey seal pups isn't easy... it takes time, money, patience and a good ability to dodge sneaky ankle attacks to do successfully. There are only a handful of centres in the UK that can raise these beautiful animals to release point and we're so happy to cap off another successful season with a happy story! 👏😍
