Recently we've had A levels results.... we've had GCSE results..... TODAY we have BBKA - The British Beekeepers Association Honey Bee Health Assessment results!!
Myself and my fellow Bee Wild beekeeper, Tash, are both celebrating passing our latest assessment! It's never too late to keep expanding your knowledge, especially when it helps keep your honeybees healthy! Oooooooo and it means we'll both get another beautiful certificate for our walls as well 🙌🏻🥰🐝

How is everyone's summer going? The bees are still super busy, getting themselves ready for the colder, less bountiful months of winter. We are trying our best not to rely too heavily on smokers because of the risk of accidental fires, but where they are needed, we make sure to stand them in metal containers and never place them on dry grass, empty them responsibly and use bungs if we need to transport them between apiaries

Many people don't realise that pollen is all sorts of colours, shapes and sizes depending on which plant it has come from. Here's three examples of the different colours our bees have been collecting lately...

It's 10pm on a Wednesday evening.... what are you up to? I'm going to pick up a newly caught swarm and take them to their new home 😁 It turns out they're sisters of another swarm caught a few weeks back 😂 Hopefully they will have the same beautiful behaviours and character.

Today marks the birthday of Anton Jansa, a pioneer of modern beekeeping, which is why today is World Bee Day.

There are some simple things you can do to help out all types of pollinators, without having to get up close and personal with them. Here's some suggestions:

🐝 No Mow May! Cutting your grass less often creates natural environments and food sources for our pollinating friends

🐝 Plant more trees, shrubs and flowers, particularly early pollinators like crocus, snowdrops and fruit trees to give them the head start they need after winter

🐝 Dedicate a part of your garden to a wild garden area

Have you ever seen bees flying around a plant and ignoring some flowers but landing on others? Ever wonder why they don’t visit ALL the flowers?

This is because some flowers, such as the Forget-Me-Not, signal to pollinators to let them know if they’ve already been visited or not! The nectaries of a Forget-Me-Not are located at the base of the corolla. Around the opening to the corolla is a fleshy yellow ring, this ring changes from yellow to white once the nectar stores have been depleted or the flower has been pollinated (depending what stage of its life the flower is at). This lets bees, such as the honeybee, know there is no need to visit! How amazing is that!

Tell the truth, who is now going to be looking at Forget-Me-Nots that little bit closer the next time they see some?

Thankfully the smoker stayed lit today as it was a day of manipulations, learning and structured chaos which ended with happy bees 🐝 😀
