Today marks the birthday of Anton Jansa, a pioneer of modern beekeeping, which is why today is World Bee Day.

There are some simple things you can do to help out all types of pollinators, without having to get up close and personal with them. Here's some suggestions:

🐝 No Mow May! Cutting your grass less often creates natural environments and food sources for our pollinating friends

🐝 Plant more trees, shrubs and flowers, particularly early pollinators like crocus, snowdrops and fruit trees to give them the head start they need after winter

🐝 Dedicate a part of your garden to a wild garden area

Happy World Bee Day 🐝 ❤️ 🌎

Have you ever seen bees flying around a plant and ignoring some flowers but landing on others? Ever wonder why they don’t visit ALL the flowers?

This is because some flowers, such as the Forget-Me-Not, signal to pollinators to let them know if they’ve already been visited or not! The nectaries of a Forget-Me-Not are located at the base of the corolla. Around the opening to the corolla is a fleshy yellow ring, this ring changes from yellow to white once the nectar stores have been depleted or the flower has been pollinated (depending what stage of its life the flower is at). This lets bees, such as the honeybee, know there is no need to visit! How amazing is that!

Tell the truth, who is now going to be looking at Forget-Me-Nots that little bit closer the next time they see some?

Thankfully the smoker stayed lit today as it was a day of manipulations, learning and structured chaos which ended with happy bees 🐝 😀

Sorry but I have to share this… I think I’ve found out that one of my colonies is a childish as I am 😂 It certainly gave me a much needed giggle during the inspections yesterday!

We had some really interesting but exciting head scratching moments at the weekend and this was one of them, twins!

It can be a sign of a new queen getting to grips with her job of laying or a sign that we have a worker bee thats started to lay. We don't want that because their eggs are not fertilised which would mean too many boy bees!

Thankfully this time its a new queen ❤️🐝🌻

We always love seeing our girls with their baskets full of pollen but we’ve never seen a bee close up with different coloured pollen before…. Until this weekend! It looks like this little girl has a quick visit to a different flower thinking no-one would notice. How amazing is it to be able to see this blue/green stripe of pollen neatly packed among all the yellow pollen she collected.

First inspections of our main hives were done on Sunday…. Some of the girls are doing exactly as they should be… and the others? They decided to ensure that our brains were well and truly challenged 😂 The beekeeping season is well and truly here and we’re so excited to get going!

Fun beekeeping fact. Sir Edmund Hillary, the first person to successfully scale Mount Everest was also a beekeeper. Does anyone know any other famous beekeepers?
