CLEANING UP GREEN STREET GREEN
Five local Street Friends, undeterred by the wet weather, litter-picked Green Street Green High Street, The Green and Crescent Way Open Space on Saturday 6th June, a few days after idverde had cut the grass and left a trail of shredded litter behind. We collect, count and put bottles and cans in the appropriate recycling bins opposite The Buff pub, and ask Veolia to collect the remainder on their daily litter-bin emptying round.

It was our 45th Community Clean Up and we collected:
▪️ 208 glass/plastic bottles and cans
▪️ 11 Fastgas nitrous oxide canisters
▪️ 3 purple sacks filled with litter and detritus

Since we started counting items we litter-pick in 2022 we have collected and recycled:
▪️ 26,664 glass/plastic bottles and cans
▪️ 3,521 small, medium and large nitrous oxide canisters
▪️ 721 single-use vapes (legal and illegal)
▪️ 521 purple sacks filled with litter and detritus

Sadly, there’s no sign of the casual littering epidemic subsiding, and despite the banning of nitrous oxide canisters in November 2024, and subsequent lull in their dumping locally in 2025, the numbers we (and others) are collecting has increased in 2026.

We represent a few of over a 1,000 Street Friends locally and across Bromley borough who regularly go litter-picking and, as John Read of Clean Up Britain said this week, “if it wasn’t for them, we would literally be living in a litter wasteland; it’s that bad” - https://www.facebook.com/reel/4473577399521187

Our 46th Community Clean Up will be on Saturday 11th July, meeting at 10.00 am by the Village Sign opposite the Waitrose store.

NEW COMMUNITY POLICE CAR FOR ORPINGTON
A new community police car was officially launched on 19 May, funded jointly by the Bromley Safer Neighbourhood Board and Orpington 1st Business Improvement District.

The investment strengthens the partnership approach to community safety across the borough, supporting local officers in their work to protect businesses, residents, and visitors. The new vehicle will be deployed for town‑centre patrols, business engagement, and rapid response within the Orpington area.

Representatives from the Metropolitan Police, the Safer Neighbourhood Board, and Orpington 1st attended the launch, marking a shared commitment to maintaining a safe, welcoming, and well‑supported town centre.

Orpington 1st and the Safer Neighbourhood Board thanked Orpington SNT Sgt Luke Giles for his instrumental role in driving the project forward and ensuring the new vehicle could be delivered for the benefit of the community.

Sharon Baldwin, Chair of the Bromley Safer Neighbourhood Board and former Chief Executive of Orpington 1st, said:
“Today’s launch demonstrates what can be achieved when local partners work together with a shared commitment to community safety. The Safer Neighbourhood Board is proud to support the funding of this new police vehicle, which will strengthen visibility, improve response times, and provide reassurance to residents and businesses across the borough. We look forward to seeing the positive impact it will have on day‑to‑day policing in the town.”

A spokesperson for the Orpington 1st BID Board said:
“Ensuring Orpington remains a safe and welcoming place is central to the BID’s mission. This joint investment reflects our ongoing commitment to supporting local policing and strengthening the partnership approach that underpins a thriving town centre. We are pleased to play our part in delivering a resource that will benefit businesses, visitors, and the wider community.”

The vehicle will begin operational patrols immediately following the launch.

GREEN STREET GREEN FLY-TIPPER FINED £510
Casual fly-tipping at the Recycling Site in Pinewood Drive has blighted Green Street Green for years and years, so well done Bromley Council for catching one of many perpetrators.

Fly-tipping incidents captured on CCTV have resulted in two prosecutions, underlining the council’s ongoing commitment to tackle fly-tipping.

COMMUNITY LITTER PICK
Warren Road, Green Street Green
Saturday 16th May 2026, 10 am to 12 midday

The local election campaigns may be over, but the casual littering and fly-tipping in Chelsfield ward is never-ending - the photo (courtesy of FoWRG) shows the haul from the last litter-pick.

Friends of Warren Road Greenspace welcomes local residents to join the group litter-picking Warren Road and adjacent green spaces between Sevenoaks Road and Chelsfield Station.

Meet by the bench in Warren Road opposite the junction with Cloonmore Avenue at 10 am to collect litter-picking equipment, and receive a safety briefing if it is your first time attending.

Alternatively, if you prefer and have the equipment, just start litter picking. At the end of the litter pick we leave the filled bags (and any other miscellaneous junk collected) at the junction of Warren Road/Meadway for collection by Bromley Council's contractor.

Otherwise please take your bag of litter home and put it out with your next appropriate rubbish collection.

If you would like further information, or have any questions, please follow the link to the Friends of Warren Road Greenspace website: http://warrenroadgreenspace.weebly.com/

WHO KNEW UP TO 30% OF RECYCLING IN BROMLEY IS GREEN GARDEN WASTE?
If you are one of the 40% of households in LB Bromley that pay £80 per bin per year for the Green Garden Waste Collection Service, you are also enabling Bromley to be London’s best performing borough for recycling?

Green garden waste collected from households and delivered to the Reuse and Recycling Centres contributes up to
30% of the total household waste recycling rate, according to Bromley Council's Environment & Community Services Performance Overview for Q1 Apr-Jun 2025-https://cds.bromley.gov.uk/documents/s50124965/Appendix%201%20Environment%20and%20Community%20Services%20Performance%20Overview%20V4.pdf

However, CPRE London reports that overall London’s recycling rate remains the second lowest in England - https://www.cprelondon.org.uk/news/new-data-out-london-still-failing-to-improve-recycling-rates/

Interestingly Bromley Council's Environment & Community Services Performance Overview for Q3 Oct-Dec 2025 -https://cds.bromley.gov.uk/documents/s50127335/P%20overview%20Revised%20appendix.pdf - notes:

"The household recycling rate at Q3 remains slightly below target at 50%. Green garden waste contributes to the recycling rate and the amount of garden waste collected during the first three
quarters of the year was lower than last year (20%) - this is largely due to the dry summer that we experienced. The
recycling collection services were promoted over Christmas via Environment Matters to encourage residents to make the most of their kerbside recycling and food waste services and we will continue to provide a high level of service to ensure the overall recycling rate remains high. However, due to this decrease in garden waste it is likely that the recycling rate will remain at 50%."
