"You feel like you have to be the rock."

Dave has been bereaved by su***de twice. He lost his brother in 2012, and three years ago his 16-year-old granddaughter.

He described a particular kind of isolation that follows a death by su***de: people are frightened of upsetting you, so nobody asks. On top of that is the coroner’s inquest, which can delay any sense of closure for a long time.

Dave has now met with one of our workers for long-term support, and joined our Su***de Bereavement Walks and Talks in parks across South East London.

"They don’t give you the answer, because there isn’t one. But they are there to support."

Our Su***de Bereavement Service supports people across South East London who have lost someone to su***de. We accept self-referrals and professional referrals, including children and young people.

With thanks to Dave for sharing his story 💙

The Su***de Bereavement Service is run in partnership with South London and Maudsley NHS Foundation Trust and Mind in Bexley who are hosting a joint Su***de Remembrance Event on the 10 September.

Good luck to everyone receiving their results today!

Whatever the outcome, please remember they don't define you or what your future will be.

Success looks different for everyone - and you get to decide how it looks for you.

It could be:
- Living your life in a way that’s true to yourself and your values
- Surrounding yourself with people who make you feel good about yourself
- Being a kind person
- Being willing to try new or difficult things

Whatever comes next, we believe it’ll be amazing. You’ve got this.

This we're highlighting our Minds Up service, providing crucial and age appropriate mental health training for school students.

Here's what a Head of Department at one of our participating schools had to say about the programme:

“We approached SEL Mind for the Minds Up training to strengthen our whole-school approach to mental health and wellbeing.

We were looking for a structured, evidence-informed programme that could equip both staff and students with practical strategies to manage stress, build resilience, and promote open conversations around mental health.

Our goal was to create a more supportive and proactive environment where students feel confident seeking help and staff feel better prepared to respond effectively. After working with staff from SEL Mind over the past 2 years, the results were great.

Our experience with Minds Up has been extremely positive. The programme has contributed to a noticeable shift in how mental health is discussed within our school community. Students are more open about their experiences and more willing to access support, while staff have developed a more consistent and informed approach to wellbeing. We have also observed improvements in student engagement and self-awareness, particularly in how they manage stress during high-pressure periods such as exams.

The Minds Up programme has been a highly valuable investment in our students’ wellbeing and our staff’s professional development. It provides a practical, accessible, and impactful approach to mental health support in schools.

Continued funding and expansion of this programme would enable more students and staff to benefit from early intervention and preventative support, which is crucial in today’s educational landscape.”

Our CEO, Ben Taylor has responded to the Government's announcement of a £343 million investment in mental health services across England.

According to NHS England, the boost will help to open 159 NHS mental health centres in England. Across London, the investment will fund 23 neighbourhood mental health centres and 10 mental health emergency departments, aimed at giving people earlier local support and specialist crisis care outside A&E.

In South East London, this will help to fund two new sites including two Community Mental Health Centres in in Lambeth and Southwark and two Mental Health Emergency Departments (at the South London and Maudsley NHS Foundation Trust and Queen Mary Hospital sites).

Ben Taylor, Chief Executive, South East London Mind, said,
‘We welcome the Government’s commitment to invest in improving access to community mental health support, and the news that some of the new Centres will be in South East London. It is important that the new Community Mental Health Centres are appropriately resourced and designed to address inequalities. They should also build on and integrate with existing services and involve the Voluntary and Community Sector (VCS) in their planning and delivery from the outset.

We know that achieving meaningful change will require strong local partnerships. As an organisation already working alongside NHS trusts, local authorities and community organisations across South East London, we look forward to continuing to work closely with both trusts and our community partners to help ensure these plans succeed, delivering support that is accessible, equitable and responsive to the needs of local people”

As South East London Mind, we want to be there when it matters and do our best to support local people, especially the most vulnerable in society.

We make sure our mental health and dementia support services are tailored to the needs, preferences and experiences of the local communities we serve in Bromley, Greenwich, Lambeth, Lewisham and Southwark.

We're an independent charity, which means we raise our own funds and our Board is responsible for how we're run.

We're proud to be part of the Mind network 🤝

This Autumn, South East London Mind and blackpsychotherapy are launching Building Power, Together, a new group-based counselling and wellbeing offer for Black communities in Southwark.

Delivered through the Southwark Wellbeing Hub, the service will provide a supportive, culturally responsive space for connection, reflection and collective wellbeing.

It has been developed for people who may not have felt fully seen, heard or understood in traditional therapeutic spaces, and for those who want support that recognises the role of culture, identity, community and lived experience in mental health.
