The demand for safe, comfortable places to walk, cycle and wheel continues to grow in Aberdeenshire as more people choose active and sustainable ways to travel.
We are supporting this change by encouraging long-term behaviour which benefits both individuals and communities.
The 'Share Space Rural Walking and Cycling Routes' project, which was first trialled in 2022, aims to make selected rural minor roads more welcoming and people-friendly for everyone.
This pilot scheme featured three different locations - Polinar Dam ‘loop’ in Inverurie, the Woodhead of Fyvie to Gight route and the Ythan Trail and Fernie Brae Road in Cornhill, Banff.
With such an extensive network of country roads where traffic levels and speeds are generally low, such routes across the north-east have real potential to support walking, cycling and horse riding as attractive travel options.
We’re now carrying out a follow-up survey to hear your views on the trial locations. Your feedback is vital in helping us understand the project’s impact and decide whether it should be expanded to other areas.
The initiative also complements wider work to link communities, improve access to public paths and support local aspirations.
