As a man, when was the last time you genuinely looked after yourself?

Last Friday, our Talking Calabash session focused on self-care, and what it really means for men.

We explored some honest questions:

* Do men make enough time for themselves?
* What stops us from looking after our own wellbeing?
* Is asking for help a sign of weakness?
* How do we recognise when we are not doing well?
* What does self-care look like when life is busy and responsibilities keep piling up?
* Are we better at looking after everyone else than we are at looking after ourselves?

The conversation highlighted an important point: self-care is not selfish.

It can be as simple as getting enough rest, exercising, eating well, taking time away from pressure, talking to someone you trust, or recognising that you need support.

At APlace2BeLong CIC, we believe men need spaces where they can have these conversations openly, without judgement.

Thank you to everyone who came along and contributed to the discussion.

Talking Calabash continues every Friday, 7–8pm at Chadderton Wellbeing Centre.

Another powerful Talking Calabash session completed.

Last Friday, we brought men together for an open and honest conversation about prostate health and prostate cancer.

With the support of our guest speaker, we explored risk, symptoms, PSA testing, family history and, importantly, why having conversations about men’s health matters.

But as always with Talking Calabash, it wasn’t just about the information.

It was about creating a space where men could listen, share, ask questions and speak without judgement.

Our traditional Passing the Calabash conversation gave everyone the opportunity to reflect on their own health, experiences and the barriers that can sometimes prevent men from seeking support.

This session was made possible through support from our partners and also, funding from , helping us create safe spaces where men can connect, talk and access information that can make a real difference.

Men talking. Men listening. Men supporting men.

Thank you to our guest speaker and everyone who came along and contributed to the conversation.

This is only the beginning.

TALKING CALABASH | PROSTATE CANCER AWARENESS

This Friday, 28 August, APlace2Belong CIC is creating space for men to have an open and honest conversation about prostate health with a professional.

Prostate cancer is something every man should understand, but the risk is particularly important for Black men.

This session will cover:

• What the prostate is and what prostate cancer means
• Who is most at risk
• Signs and symptoms to be aware of
• What a PSA blood test is
• When to speak to your GP
• Family history and prostate cancer risk
• Common myths and misconceptions
• Your questions — in a safe, respectful and judgement-free environment

You don’t need to be experiencing symptoms to attend.

Talking about your health isn’t weakness. Knowing your risk is taking responsibility for your health.
