1855 Royton Air Cadets

Yesterday was the North Region training day at RAF Leeming. Teams from Greater Manchester, Cumbria & Lancs, Central & East Yorks, South & West Yorks, Durham & Northumberland and Merseyside Wings took part in the following disciplines.
Leadership, First Aid, Banner Drill, Foot Drill, Archery and DCCT (shooting).
Two of our Cadets, King and Westphal, were selected to represent GM wing in the archery competition.
Although the Archery team came 3rd overall Westphal achieved a personal best scoring 112 out of a possible 120.
Greater Manchester were crowned regional champions after a closely fought competition with Cumbria & Lancs.
A huge congratulations to both Cadets for representing 1855 Squadron not only at Wing but at Regional level as well.

Last week the cadets were engaged in an engineering project. Jonny Brown from Assystem was our guest instructor and he set the cadets a challenge to make a cradle for an egg that would protect it if dropped but would also provide easy access to the egg.
The cadets had to design their product then with a budget of 99 tokens cost their design and purchase the materials to construct it
Once constructed the cadets had to present their design to the other teams.
The deigns ranged from the egg being wrapped in cotton wool to a cup attached to a parachute with a crumple zone.
Finally the designs were put to the test starting from a height of .5m unfortunately team snap crackle and pop failed at their first attempt
Next to leave the competition was team Unique Unicorns which left team Swagger and team Fluffy Cup to battle it out. Team Fluffy Cup exited the competition at 2m which left team Swagger and Assytem to go to the maximum height of 2.5m both were successful and so it was a draw.
All through the process the cadets were marked and assessed.
First place went to team Sawgger although there was very little between all the scores.
A big thank you goes out to Jonny and to the cadets for their enthusiasm with the project.

We are so incredibly proud of 1855 cadets for all their hard work they put into the Wing Training Day preparation. We placed 5th overall out of Greater Manchester Wing which is amazing, achieving 2nd place in first aid, 2nd place in archery, 3rd place in banner drill and 3rd place in overall drill. Well done to everyone involved, it was a great day.

On Sunday, cadets from 1855 (Royton) Squadron attended the Oldham Battle of Britain Parade. We were proud to represent the squadron and pay respect to those that gave ‘their tomorrow, for our today’

Yesterdays evening parade saw the Squadron bid a fond farewell to Corporal Hough.
Corporal Hough joined the Squadron in September 2024 where his enthusiasm and commitment to support squadron events did not go unnoticed.
Having completed his initial recruit syllabus he progressed to Cadet First Class.
Corporal Hough continued with his personal development becoming a bronze leader and completing his Junior Non Commissioned Officer course.
At last years wing training day he was part of the drill team and received a perfect 10 for his appearance at the inspection part of the drill. A trait that saw him awarded smartest cadet at last years annual presentation evening.
Corporal Hough continued to progress completing a number of further classification qualifications to become a leading Cadet. His contribution to RAFAC and the squadron saw him promoted to the rank of Corporal earlier this year. He also had the honour of being the banner bearer at last years remembrance parade and more recently representing the squadron at a WW1 Commonwealth War Graves Commission Grave and Headstone Dedication. Corporal Hough leaves the Squadron to concentrate on his academic studies in order to achieve his ambition of being a pilot in the RAF
Congratulations on all you have achieved and on behalf of all members of staff, the civilian committee and most of all your fellow cadets we wish you every success in the future.

August has been a quieter month with staff and cadets on their summer holidays and cadet camps, despite this staff have managed to complete additional training to enable us deliver more varied activities for the cadets at Royton.
We have a busy month in September with wing training day and new recruits starting on Monday 7th September.
It’s not too late to join us, if your son or daughter is interested in joining the air cadets, please pop up from 18.30 on Monday 7th September.

Today we were honoured to be part of “Operation brought in from the cold” in attending a dedication service on behalf of the World War One Commonwealth War Graves Commission in association with the Royal British Legion, Royton Branch held at Royton Cemetery.
The Grave and Headstone Dedication Service was for
Corporal John Johnston
Private Joseph William Haigh
Gunner Fred Mellor
Who all served in the First World War.
Royton Cadets Sergeant Lam, Corporal Hough and First Class Cadet Thomas formed part of the Banner team while Cadet Warrant Hollingworth was on Royal British Legion duty.
