A well-designed communication book is much more than a collection of symbols. It gives AAC users access to vocabulary that helps them express what they want to say, across different people, places and situations.

Ace Centre’s Developing and Using a Communication Book (DUCB) approach provides practical guidance for creating personalised communication books. It explores how to:

- choose an appropriate stage for the individual
- select and organise useful core and topic-based vocabulary
- personalise vocabulary around the learner’s interests, needs and environments
- organise pages so vocabulary is easier to find
- develop the communication book as the learner’s communication grows
- support communication partners to model symbols and scaffold communication.

When we think about eye gaze and AAC, it’s easy to think about technology. But one of the most sophisticated pieces of technology in the room is often the communication partner.

Parents and professionals can learn to notice small changes in where someone is looking, interpret those movements and respond to them. By showing someone that we’ve noticed where they are looking and that their gaze can have meaning, we can begin to build the foundations for more purposeful eye pointing.

Over time, those early interactions can develop into using their eyes to choose between objects, photos, symbols and words. High-tech eye gaze may become part of someone’s communication toolkit, but there is plenty we can explore and learn together without technology.

Making decisions about AAC isn’t just about choosing a communication system. It starts with understanding how someone communicates in everyday life, what they communicate about, who they communicate with and where communication happens.

Taking time to build that fuller picture can help us recognise existing communication skills, identify areas that could be developed and make more informed decisions about what support might be useful.

The Pragmatics Profile for People who use AAC is a free resource designed to help professionals explore functional communication through conversation with the people who know the AAC user well. It looks at everything from reasons for communicating and the methods someone uses, to how communication varies across environments and communication partners.

Good communication is a two-way process, and when someone uses AAC, the people they communicate with have an important part to play too.

As AAC professionals, we can support communication partners to feel more confident in their role. Small changes such as giving someone time, creating opportunities to communicate, responding to their attempts and modelling language on their AAC can all help conversations become more successful and inclusive.

Supporting AAC isn't just about finding the right system. It's also about helping the people around an AAC user develop the skills and confidence to communicate together.

How confident do you feel supporting someone who uses more than one language?

Many AAC users live, learn and communicate across different languages, perhaps using one language at school or work and another with family and friends. Understanding how best to reflect those languages within AAC can sometimes feel challenging, particularly when we don’t speak the languages ourselves.

The good news is that you don’t need to have all the answers to get started. Taking time to understand which languages someone uses, who they use them with and what matters to them can help us make more informed decisions about their AAC.
