Sunday 23rd. August.

RUGBY RESULT:
Oldham 36 Salford 28
Half time: 18 - 16
Oldham scorers:
Tries: L. Forber, Ashurst (3), Liu, Day.
Conversions: Smith (6)
Salford scorers:
Tries: Hartley, Glover, Dixon, Baldwin, Sharpe,
Conversions: Dixon (4)
In front of the largest crowd so far this season (1752) it was another nerve jangler. It is great to see Salford in the league following their recent troubles and with a boisterous away following it was soon clear that they were never going to be a push over. In the first few minutes of the game they took a 6 - 0 lead through two former Oldham players - Hartley try and Dixon conversion.
Salford showed more enthusiasm and enterprise than last week's visitors and mid way through the first half were leading 6 - 16. However, tries from Forber, two from Ashurst (who went on to score a hattrick) and Smith conversions gave The Roughyeds a half time lead.
The second half was very stop start with numerous scrums, penalties and a referee who failed to show any real authority.
There was an almighty set-to towards the end. Liu was too enthusiastic after a Salford lad had already been clearly tackled. A whole bunch of Salford players took offence and suddenly it was all pile in. When all calmed down the referee produced two yellow cards, one being to Oldham's Tom Nisbet. As he was serving his time in the sin bin he was announced as M-O-M!
How Brad Day wasn't given that accolade was beyond our commentators, Richard and Gerald.
Oldham be warned. Salford wanted your scalp and so will Hornets next Sunday. So you had better be ready. We just about got away with it today.

Friday 21st. August.

David Fielding was having a day off so this morning's presenters of "Oldham Today" were Gerald Brierley, Pat Davies and our Bardsley correspondent, Sue Slater.

*****
Pat's one word / three meanings:
1. Loving his / her own opinion.
2. Of or relating to pigeons.
3. Having woolly or tightly curled hair.
*****

We had to start by mentioning the impasse at Oldham Council. Tempted to pass comment but resisted.

Sue told us that the Bardsley Community Centre on Tensing Street which was set up just a couple of years ago is now well established and thriving with all different types of activities. It is open each weekday except Tuesday.

We all know that Oldham's roads seem to have more than their fair share of potholes From 2023 - 2026, 7234 potholes have been reported to the council and over ยฃ6000 paid out by them in compensation.

Another big match for Oldham RLFC on Sunday when Salford are the visitors. They are bound to bring a good sized following and with Oldham offering free entry to under 16's there should be a great atmosphere. We will have full live commentary but it is always better to BE THERE! 3 p.m. kick-off.

We had a brief discussion about the comedian Jimmy Cricket whose funeral was today at Salford R.C. Cathedral, and the celebrant of the Mass being his son Father Frankie - what emotion he must have felt during the service!

Hack Oldham, Yorkshire street have many activities and one is a pottery class The next one is on Saturday 29th. August. There are two 90 minute classes - 11.30 and 1.30. All materials are provided with the use of a potter's wheel or hand sculpting under the tutelage of a professional potter, whose name is not Harry despite Ian Wolstenholme's wish for it to be so. To book a place call 0161 627 2539.

Great family days out continue at Cockfields Farm Park OL6 8AR until August 31st. Call 0161 331 3322

Sue's husband Matt plays with A Parcel of Rogues. They play traditional and not-so-traditional Irish music. They will be playing at the Glaston Bury festival on August Bank Holiday Monday. Yes, that's in Bury - can't decide whether that name is quite clever or far too corny. However, it will be the last time their fiddle player will be with them. If you think you would like to fill the breach check out their website.

PERISTERONIC:
2. Of or pertaining to pigeons

Enjoy the weekend!
