Oldham Mountain Rescue Team Oldham Mountain Rescue Team was formed in 1964 and is just one of 60 volunteer Mountain & Cave Rescue Teams providing a search and rescue services.

Prepared to help people in difficulties in the wild and remote places of England and Wales. Oldham Mountain Rescue Team is a voluntary organisation whose objective is “to save life and alleviate distress, primarily in upland and mountain areas” without cost or obligation. Oldham Mountain Rescue Team was formed in 1964 and is just one of around 53 volunteer mountain and cave rescue teams providing

a search and rescue service prepared to help people in difficulties in the wild and remote places of England and Wales. There are 24 teams in Scotland and 3 in Northern Ireland. Each team works mainly in its own area and provides a service linked to local physical and geographical needs. For the Oldham team it is the northern end of the Peak District National Park the rural and urban areas of Greater Manchester. We have strong links with Greater Manchester Police, North West Ambulance Service and The Greater Manchester Fire and Rescue Service. The team helps the Police in other search activities in areas and conditions where they may not have adequate, resources or experience. In addition to mountain rescue and search activities, the team is available as a back up for the ambulance and fire services at busy times, during severe weather, major incident or where our specialist skills are needed. Our team of 50+ volunteers provide a professional rescue service 24hours a day, 7 days a week, 365 days a year. We are funded almost entirely by generous public donation.

Last weekend was a busy couple of days for the team with team members attending 3 callouts and a training exercise.

On Saturday late afternoon we were called by North West Ambulance Service to assist with a walker who had injured their ankle at Dovestones. We were quickly on scene together with an NWAS crew. After an assessment, the ankle was splinted and the patient carried on our stretcher a short distance to the ambulance.
15 Team Members were involved for 1.5 hrs.

One hour after we had packed up from that incident we were again called by North West Ambulance Service to assist with a walker who had taken a tumble on Lark Hill near Dobcross. Just as Team Members started arriving on scene the patient had managed to get to the ambulance with the assistance of the crew.
15 Team Members were involved for 40 minutes.

The next morning, we were up early for our full day monthly training exercise. This months’ exercise took place in the Rimmon Clough area where we practised hauling a casualty up steep slopes and lowering them down again. The final part of the exercise was a technical stretcher carry following the river over the numerous boulders requiring good communication and teamwork. It was a very successful exercise where skills were built on.

To finish off the weekend, we were called just before midnight, by Greater Manchester Police, to assist with 4 lost walkers on the moor above Dovestones. After verifying their location and with confirmation from the National Police Air Service helicopter of their whereabouts, we quickly dispatched Team members to their location. Once located and checked over they were walked off the moor to our Team vehicles and then taken back to their car.
16 Team Members were involved for 2.5 hours

Team members headed back to their homes for a well-earned rest.

Thanks to everyone who made the latest edition of the Dovestone Diamond multi - terrain race a great success!

Runners were not disappointed with the mix of trails, climbs and stunning views around Dovestone providing both a challenge and memorable experience for everyone who took part. From seasoned competitors chasing personal bests to those taking on their first multi-terrain challenge, the event had something for everyone.

The event village added to the great atmosphere, with Pizza'ere - Romiley and Coffee Pod keeping runners and spectators well fed and hydrated, and Physio Matters Neurological Ltd offering pre and post race sports massages, with donations supporting OMRT.

Race results and links to photos taken at the event can be found on our FB Dovestone Diamond event page.

We would like to say a huge thank you to the dedicated team of volunteers and supporters who worked behind the scenes to make this event a success and ensured everything ran smoothly on the night. Events like this simply wouldn’t happen without their time, effort, and enthusiasm.

We would also like to thank Up & Running Oldham for providing the vest numbers, Best Food Logistics for providing the water, Manchester Cabins for the toilets and volunteers from Greenfield Greyhounds and other local running clubs for support with marshalling the route.

And finally thanks to all the runners who took part, we look forward to seeing you next year.

22/05/26

On Friday afternoon we were called to support North West Ambulance Service (NWAS) with a report of a walker who had fallen in Birchen Clough, near Dovestones.

Volunteer team members made their way by team 4x4 vehicles up past Greenfield reservoir to the bottom of Birchen Clough. The rescue party then headed up the Clough on foot with a paramedic, towards the casualty located near the waterfall.
After being checked by the paramedic, the casualty was carefully escorted down the rocky challenging path of Birchen Clough to the waiting vehicles, for onward care with the paramedic.

Massive thank you to the CraggRunner community and the CragRunner organisers Darren and Joolz for raising this amount of money for the Team.
Whilst on the way to the 5 Trigs event to say thanks we were diverted to assist North West Ambulance Service with a patient with a broken leg in a difficult to access location.
It's donations like this that allows us to provide this service to the community in the local area. After the incident we headed back to the event to catch up with Darren and Joolz to say thanks.
Check out their races here https://craggrunner.com/

Oldham Mountain Rescue and Craggrunner would like to say a huge thank you to all of our generous participants who have donated so far this year.

Together, we have raised a fantastic £760 so far in 2026. Dave and Ian from Oldham Mountain Rescue Team popped down to our Five Trigs event on Saturday to receive the good news.

Your donations make such a difference to the incredible work Mountain Rescue do. Their service is funded entirely by voluntary donations and, whilst we all hope we never need them, one day it could be any of us relying on their help.

Thank you again for your continued support 💙
