On , we’re focused on ways that we can help to improve the climate of our planet.

You’ve probably felt temperatures rising, and it’s looking like me might be in for another hot Summer! While this might be great for helping your tan, it’s also a warning from our planet that things need to change, and everyone can play their part.

At Life for a Life, our Memorial Forests not only give families a place to rest and reflect on their loved ones, but they also help to offset carbon emissions and cool ground temperatures.

Every action helps, so if you’d like to help improve the climate you can start with something as simple as being mindful of your carbon footprint - on average a litre of fuel emits between 2-3kg of Carbon Dioxide, so make the most of the fair weather by walking or cycling to work - your commute may even take you through one of our Memorial Forests, where you’ll be able to feel the difference in temperature under the canopy of our Memorial Trees!

We only have one Earth, so let’s look after it!

This week, our Grounds Team joined with
- Nature & Wellbeing Volunteer Group to tackle Himalayan balsam that has spread into the established woodland by our Half Moon Bay memorial forest.

Himalayan balsam is a fast-growing invasive plant that quickly outcompetes native wild flowers by blocking light and dominating large areas. It dies back in winter, leaving bare ground behind and preventing native plants from re-establishing.

By working together to remove it, we’re helping to restore space for native flora, support local wildlife, and protect the long-term health of the woodland ecosystem.

It’s No Mow May!

During this month, we joined .loveplants in encouraging natural growth at our Memorial Forests, including a huge variety of natural wildflowers and grasses.

We’ve been part of this movement for years, and Phil is sharing the story behind one of our longest-running wildflower meadows at Crook O’Lune Memorial Forest. Established with ‘Community Pollinator Patches’, this stunning green space is home to a variety of species of wildflowers, many of which are in full bloom right now!

As you walk through our Memorial Forests this month, keep an eye out for groups of bees flying between flowers looking for nectar, and consider planting some native British wildflowers of your own in your garden at home, or around a Memorial Tree dedicated to your loved ones.

Wednesday marks , a celebration of our bees and pollinators and the vital role they play in our environment.

At Life for a Life we’re a big fan of our local bees, which are responsible for helping our Memorial Forests by pollinating wildflower, increasing the health and overall resilience of the woodland.

Reports suggest that bee populations have been steadily declining in the UK, so it’s important that we all do our part to help those numbers improve! At Life for a Life, we take part in each year - a movement created by .loveplants dedicated to allowing natural meadows to grow uninterrupted during the month of May, providing bees and other pollinators with much needed nutrients during this key time.

Yesterday it was a privilege to be joined by the The Mayor of Oldham, Cllr Eddie Moores, and the Lady Mayoress, Kath Moores, to unveil the new signage we have sponsored at Tandle Hill Country Park.

The park has been home to one of the charities memorial forests since 2004, marking the very beginning of our partnership with . As the first council to support our work, Oldham has played a key role in helping the charity grow into what it is today - supporting over 156,000 people through their bereavement journeys.

Our roots are firmly planted in Oldham and to give something back to the community and enhance the visitor experience for all park users is a real honour.

This week we're joining The Tree Council in celebrating National Hedgerows Week. 🌱

Hedgerows are one of the most common features across landscapes in our country, but you might not know just how important they are!

More than just a simple barrier between spaces, hedgerows are actually made up of several tree species which come together to provide vital habitats for many wildlife species, from insects to hedgehogs and birds, and provide safe travel routes for those species; not only that, but these hedges are also responsible for filtering carbon dioxide for cleaner air, and help to reduce flooding and improve water drainage. The natural beauty that hedges add to any greenspace or urban area is an added bonus! 💮

For our part, we regularly work with volunteers and community groups to plant new hedgerows, and continue to maintain them as we do with each Memorial Tree in our woodlands.

Today we celebrate , a day dedicated to making a small-but-mighty change in our environment! 💥

We regularly team up with volunteer groups on a variety of projects, from litter picking to removing invasive plant species, but we also champion our microvolunteers – members of the public who help to keep our Memorial Forests tidy and safe from pests and disease by removing litter, or those who tell us about Memorial Trees which may need some TLC, and even those that offer a friendly “hello” to other visitors. 🌳

If you’re looking to make a positive change to the world, you can start today! Microvolunteering is all about doing something helpful in a bitesize way, whether it’s on your own or in a group, during your lunch break or over the weekend – all that matters is that you’re doing something good! 🙌

If you’d like to see what we’ve been doing with our volunteer groups, please take a look at our social media channels or sign up to our newsletter for updates on how we’ve been improving our environment. 📰

Today the team have been installing new memorial benches a long the Delph Donkey and Tame Loop with I love Oldham replacing worn out benches with new ones for walkers, cyclist and Horse Riders to enjoy.

Not long after we’d installed this one did Pete and Val, as well as others test the installation for us whilst out on their walks, enjoying the views over Well-I-Hole Farm and Alderman Hill.

If you would like to dedicate a bench on this lovely route then please get in touch.
