If you watched Full Council last night, you will have seen Oldham officially welcome a new Mayor. 🚨

Councillor Pam Byrne, of the Conservative Group, has taken over the chains of office from Councillor Eddie Moores and will now serve as the borough’s First Citizen for the year ahead.

A well-known and respected figure across Saddleworth and Oldham, Pam has dedicated many years to serving local communities and has long been involved in public life. Her appointment marks the beginning of a new chapter as she takes on one of the borough’s most historic and important civic roles.

The Mayor acts as an ambassador for Oldham, representing the borough at community events, supporting local charities and celebrating the incredible people, volunteers and organisations that make our town what it is.

A Deputy Mayor has not yet been appointed and will be discussed at a later date.

We would also like to thank Councillor Eddie Moores for his service as Mayor over the past year. Throughout his term, he represented the borough with pride and dedication, attending countless events and supporting communities across Oldham.

Congratulations to Mayor Pam Byrne on her appointment. We wish her every success in the year ahead and look forward to seeing her celebrate the very best of Oldham during her mayoral year.

In light of the appalling recent hate attacks targeting Muslim and other religious and ethnic communities across Britain, we want to encourage everyone to remain calm, united and supportive of one another.

Hate has no place in our communities. At times like these, it is more important than ever that we come together rather than allow division to take hold. Let’s check in on our neighbours, friends and vulnerable members of our communities to make sure everyone feels safe, supported and valued.

Oldham has always shown resilience during difficult times. While other parts of the country may be experiencing tension and uncertainty, our town has consistently demonstrated the strength that comes from unity, respect and understanding.

No matter our faith, ethnicity or background, we are all part of the same community. Everyone deserves to be treated with dignity, kindness and respect. It is our ability to stand together through challenges that makes Oldham such a unique and special place.

If you see hate, challenge it. If you see someone struggling, support them. If you know someone who may be feeling worried or isolated, reach out and check on them.

Let’s continue to show the country what Oldham does best: standing together when it matters most.

A British Bangladeshi community leader in Oldham has been named a finalist in the BBC Radio Manchester Make A Difference Awards, becoming what is believed to be the first Bangladeshi finalist in the Environment Award category.

Saleh Uddin Talukdar Sumon, who arrived in the UK from Bangladesh in 2009, has spent the past 15 years helping to improve communities across Greater Manchester through volunteering, environmental projects and community action.

From litter-picking and transforming neglected spaces to promoting sustainability and organising community clean-ups, Saleh has dedicated countless hours to making local neighbourhoods cleaner, greener and better places to live.

His work has supported a wide range of initiatives, including Keep Britain Tidy campaigns, MyColdhurst, The Great Get Together, Oldham Boishakhi Mela and The Good Deed Circles, where he currently serves as Chairman.

Those who know Saleh will tell you that he rarely seeks recognition. Instead, he is usually found working behind the scenes, bringing people together and encouraging others to take pride in their communities.

His place among the finalists is a proud moment for his family, friends and the wider British Bangladeshi community. It is also a reminder of the positive impact one person can have through years of dedication, hard work and service to others.

Whether he takes home the award or not, Saleh’s contribution to communities across Greater Manchester has already left a lasting mark.

The owners of Tokies have spoken of their disappointment after arriving at their Royton shop to find hateful graffiti sprayed across the shutters.

The family-run business has been serving the local community for more than 30 years and says it was deeply upsetting to see the shop targeted.

The graffiti appeared to reference the recent tragic death of Henry in Southampton. However, the owners said they were saddened that someone had seemingly chosen to direct their anger towards a local Asian-owned business in Oldham that had no connection whatsoever to the incident.

Adding to the frustration, the graffiti even misspelled Henry’s name.

Despite the vandalism, Tokies says it has been overwhelmed by the support shown by local residents.

A huge well done to all the Oldhamers who took part in the AJ Bell Great Manchester Run today. 👏

It was brilliant to see so many local residents taking on the challenge, with many running to raise money for charities and causes close to their hearts.

Running a 10k or half marathon is no small achievement. It takes commitment, training and determination, and everyone who crossed the finish line should be proud of what they’ve achieved.

There was also a fantastic turnout from Oldham’s Bangladeshi community, with many residents using the event to raise funds and support others.

Oldham has always been a town that gives back, and today was another great example of that. Well done to everyone who took part. 🏅

Heavy traffic is expected around Chadderton Cemetery tomorrow as many Muslim families across Oldham prepare to mark Eid.

For many people, the day does not begin with food or celebrations. It begins with prayer, family and a visit to loved ones who have passed away. Throughout the morning, thousands of people are expected to visit the cemetery to pay their respects, something which has long been part of Eid for many local families.

With large numbers expected in the area, nearby roads are likely to become congested, particularly after Eid prayers. Drivers are being encouraged to plan ahead, allow extra time for journeys and be mindful of residents living close to the cemetery.

People visiting are also being reminded to park responsibly and show patience towards one another during busy periods. Small acts of consideration can make a big difference on days like this, especially for elderly visitors, families with children and those spending emotional moments remembering relatives no longer with them.

Eid is one of the busiest and most important days of the year for many Muslim families across Oldham, and with warmer weather expected, visitor numbers are likely to be especially high throughout the day.

Congratulations to Muzahid Khan on being awarded an MBE by King Charles. 🎖️

This is a truly proud moment not just for Oldham, but for communities right across Greater Manchester. Muzahid has spent decades dedicating his life to helping others, supporting communities and bringing people together from all backgrounds. His work has never been about recognition or praise, but about service, kindness and making a genuine difference to people’s lives.

Many people across Oldham and beyond will know Muzahid for his calm leadership, his commitment to community causes and the respect he has shown to everyone throughout the years. Whether supporting charities, civic events, young people or local organisations, he has always represented the very best of public service.

As Greater Manchester’s Deputy Lord-Lieutenant, he continues to serve with dignity, humility and pride, representing communities across the region at the very highest level. To receive an MBE from King Charles is a fitting recognition for a man who has given so much of his time and energy to others throughout his life.

A thoroughly deserved honour and one the whole community can be proud of. ❤️

It was a pleasure to welcome our local councillors during the launch of Frontline MMA. Their support meant a lot to us because from the very beginning they believed in the vision we are trying to build for our community. ❤️

Frontline MMA is about far more than just fighting or fitness. It’s about creating a positive space where young people and adults can come together, stay active, build confidence, improve discipline and be surrounded by good people. Starting something like this from the ground up is never easy, so seeing our community leaders take the time to visit, show support and back our journey gave everyone involved a real boost.

We spoke about the importance of giving young people opportunities, keeping them focused, helping them grow in confidence and creating an environment where people from all backgrounds feel welcome. That belief in what we are trying to achieve is what keeps us motivated every single day.

A huge thank you to everyone who came down, supported us and showed love during the launch. This is only the beginning for Frontline MMA and we cannot wait to show the community what’s still to come.

Tomorrow on 7 May we have local elections here in Oldham. Many of you will already be aware of this, while some of you maybe not so much. Regardless, it’s important that you vote.

You don’t have to be heavily interested in politics for your vote to matter. Local elections affect the things around us every single day. Your streets, housing, schools, parks, bin collections, youth services, regeneration, community safety and the future direction of Oldham are all shaped by the people elected to represent you.

It really doesn’t matter who you vote for. What matters is using your right to vote and backing someone you genuinely believe will work hard for the community and make a good councillor.

A lot of people feel frustrated or uncertain at the moment, and that’s understandable. But staying home and not voting changes nothing. Even one vote can make a difference in local elections, especially here in Oldham where some wards can be decided by very small margins.

People before us fought hard for the right to vote and have their voices heard. The least we can do is take a few minutes out of our day and use that right.

Whilst things may feel uncertain at times in Oldham, we as residents should still go out and place our votes. It always matters.
