We are a friendly group of fellas who meet on Wednesday evenings for rehearsals and perform around 12 concerts a year in Uppermill and the North West

🎶 Another big thank you to Saddleworth Male Voice Choir for choosing to support Oldham Foodbank this year.

Join us for their Concert of Remembrance on Saturday 7th November at 7.30pm at Uppermill Civic Hall, featuring special guests Dobcross Youth Band.

It will be a wonderful evening of music, and we'll be there collecting donations in support of local people facing hardship across Oldham.

💚 We hope to see some of our supporters there. The choir's support over the coming year will make a real difference to our community.

Last night’s rehearsal was very special as we expressed our thanks to our retiring Choir President, Malcolm Hill and welcomed our new President, Martin Paul Roche - Theatre Writer.

Our Deputy Chairman, John Watts said a few words to Malcolm on behalf of the choir.

“Malcolm became Choir President on the 25th June 1984. He and his wife Margaret’s support of the choir over the past 42 years has included entertaining and feeding our ‘Messiah’ soloists between rehearsal and performance, raising choir funds through garden parties, provision of the choir regalia, joining us on choir holidays and providing some financial support in supplying the choir with concert tour polo shirts. Malcolm has also provided us with transport when our staging was stored in Saddleworth and since our purchase of a storage container has allowed us to store it at his business premises with continued transport provision.

He has rarely missed a concert and he and Margaret have joined the choir at many social events. As President, he will be a hard act to follow.

Malcolm, on behalf of the choir committee, the choir membership, choir wives and all associated with SMVC, I give you our sincere thanks for being a wonderful friend.”

The choir members rose to their feet with warm applause and heartfelt appreciation for Malcolm’s remarkable and loyal service to the choir.

Malcolm and John then passed the President’s badge of office to Martin who was warmly welcomed. John continued, “Martin is a playwright, an author, a theatre reviewer and adjudicator. He is a JP and a Deputy Lieutenant of Greater Manchester. He is already a choir patron and supports our concerts. I’m not sure if Martin fully understands what he is letting himself in for but I’m sure, with everyone’s support, he will enjoy the experience of being our President. Welcome Martin!”

It was an unforgettable evening where the true support and camaraderie of the choir was tangible. We look forward to this next chapter together.

It was an absolute privilege to welcome Mark, manager of Oldham Foodbank, to our rehearsal last night to tell us more about the work of the charity that we have decided to support this year! We’re looking forward to fundraising and providing practical support to this very worthwhile local cause this year.

There’s something truly special about singing at St Anne’s Church, Lydgate — beautiful surroundings and wonderful acoustics.

Meet Matt — one of our B1 Baritones and a brilliant example of how special singing in a choir can feel.

Matt joined Saddleworth Male Voice Choir in 2023 and sings in the B1 Baritone section. His favourite piece to perform is Bring Him Home, and some of his favourite venues we’ve sung in include Fountains Abbey and St Anne’s Church, Lydgate.

Matt is always singing to music at home or in the car, but he says singing in a choir is something else entirely. “It can make the hairs on the back of your neck stand on end and sometimes feels quite spiritual.”

What does he love most about SMVC?
“The whole choir — including our Musical Director and accompanists — are a great bunch of people. Everyone is friendly, welcoming, and looks out for each other. I’ve been amazed at how much fun we seem to have at practice evenings.”

We’re delighted to have Matt as part of our choir family.

Meet Stewart — one of our Top Tenors, singing proudly from the back row and helping to shape the upper edge of the SMVC sound.

Stewart joined Saddleworth Male Voice Choir in 2018 and sings in the Top Tenor section. One of his favourite pieces to sing is Tell My Father, though he also enjoys many of the more recent additions to our repertoire — including Bohemian Rhapsody and Fix You.
�Some of his favourite venues to perform in have been Fountains Abbey and Huddersfield Town Hall.

For Stewart, singing is about far more than just the music. He says it gives him a real sense of wellbeing and satisfaction — especially when everything comes together after a concert. He also feels it helps keep him healthy and supports his breathing, too.

What does he love most about SMVC?�Making new, lifelong friends of all ages, the camaraderie and support throughout the choir — plus the help from Dorian, which has improved his singing and understanding of music, alongside working with two great pianists.

It’s singers like Stewart who embody what SMVC is all about.
