This arresting pattern is known as 'tumbling blocks'. With a history that stretches back to Ancient Greek mosaics, the pattern creates a striking, 3D effect of stacked or falling cubes. The pattern is a staple of patchwork design as seen here in these pieces by Maggie, Anne and Pam. Not long till the Bayeux Tapestry will grace the walls of the British Museum. But did you know, despite its name, it's actually a very, very long piece of embroidery! It was created using classic embroidery stitches - stem, chain and split - as well as a special 'Bayeux' stitch to fill areas with colour.

If you embroider or would like to develop your skills with a supportive group, we meet at the lovely Saddleworth Museum and Gallery on Tuesdays from 10am. We also knit, quilt, crochet and do patchwork. Pop down to see us or email on [email protected]

For the first time since it was made nearly 1,000 years ago, the Bayeux Tapestry is returning to England.
