📊 HELP IMPROVE FELLOW SUPPORT FOR OFFICERS

North Wales Police Federation members are being encouraged to complete the National Police Workforce and Wellbeing Survey to help shape future wellbeing policies and initiatives.

The survey, delivered by the National Police Wellbeing Service (Oscar Kilo) in partnership with the independent research company Leapwise, is open until 22 June.

It takes less than 10 minutes to complete, is fully anonymised, and is open to everyone working in policing.

The Force's wellbeing lead, Jennifer Hutchinson (pictured) said the survey provides an opportunity for officers to share honest feedback about the realities of policing.

She said: "The survey has evolved over the past year and now gives us a much richer picture of what influences wellbeing across the workforce.

"It looks at a wide range of factors that can affect people's experience at work, including workload and demand, leadership, team culture, organisational support, motivation, fatigue, burnout, bullying and discrimination, as well as confidence in leadership and organisational change.

"This survey helps us understand what's working well and where improvements can be made."

🎉 OPEN DAY BRINGS FED MEMBERS TOGETHER WITH COMMUNITIES

North Wales Police’s 2026 open day proved an overwhelming success with many Federation members involved in the festivities.

The Force welcomed thousands of visitors to its headquarters in Colwyn Bay for an occasion of fun, education and community engagement.

Officers, staff and volunteers were brought together with members of the public, who were able to enjoy a wide array of demonstrations and attractions provided by both the hosts and other emergency services and partner agencies.

Ahead of the event, the Force outlined its intention for the ‘human side’ of policing to be celebrated at the open day, putting an emphasis not only on achievements and high-quality work but also the people behind them.

Federation chair Trystan Bevan echoed these sentiments as he spoke of his satisfaction at branch members having the chance to be appreciated for everything they do in their jobs.

“As much as this event was about welcoming the public in and giving them a day to remember, it was also an opportunity for officers and their families to enjoy themselves too,” Trystan said.

“Usually, if an officer is representing their force, they must be switched onto their duties and ready to complete yet more sacrifices for the sake of the public – so for them to be able to represent outside of any demanding work setting is very much welcomed."

ANGER AT SUDDEN CUT TO POLICE PENSION LUMP SUMS

Police officers in the 1987 Police Pension Scheme are facing an immediate reduction in the lump sums they receive at retirement, following a sudden change to commutation factors introduced this week.

The change was triggered by a Treasury decision to increase the SCAPE discount rate, with revised commutation factors issued today and applied with immediate effect.

Commutation factors determine how much cash an officer receives if they choose to give up part of their annual pension at retirement. Under the new factors, officers retiring from today will receive almost 5 per cent less lump sum for the same amount of pension surrendered than an officer retiring last week. That change is expected to cost police officers thousands of pounds each.

The Police Federation says the speed and timing of the change means some officers retiring now are being hit without warning, despite having received retirement quotations or benefit illustrations based on the previous factors only weeks earlier.

That means officers may have already made financial decisions based on those figures.

The Federation has confirmed it is seeking independent advice on the scale and justification for the change, and on whether those who received recent quotations could take legal action because of financial detriment.

👋 COME ALONG TO THE FORCE OPEN DAY THIS SATURDAY

Federation members will have the opportunity to connect with the communities they serve this weekend at a North Wales Police open day for 2026.

The Force is hosting the special event – the first of its kind in two years – at its headquarters in Colwyn Bay on Saturday 23 May from 10am to 5pm.

It is set to bring together officers, staff, volunteers and members of the public, as well as representatives from over 40 partner organisations, to celebrate the ‘human side’ of policing within the region.

A light will also be shined on the work of various specialised units such as fi****ms, drones, dogs and roads policing – tying into the open day’s main theme of road safety – through live demonstrations and displays.

One of these organisers is Inspector Jason Diamond, who said he was looking forward to the event.

He said: “From meeting some of our officers and staff as well as other emergency services and key volunteers in the road safety arena, there will be something for everyone."

🤝 FED REP KRIS FOCUSED ON SUPPORTING SUPERVISORS

Supporting supervisors in order to help the Force continue to improve is at the heart of Kris Williams’s approach to being a North Wales Police Federation rep.

A detective inspector, Kris is just over a year into his Fed rep role, and he has a clear sense of where he can help make a difference.

“For me, the key part is that I want to contribute to the organisation by supporting supervisors to manage their staff.

“It’s helping them to understand that is what you can do to support their staff, and the processes around that.”

Kris, who has nearly 25 years of policing experience under his belt, transferred to North Wales Police from Greater Manchester Police around five years ago.

And while some officers feel a calling to become a Federation rep, Kris only looked into it after a colleague told him he would be suited to the role.

“I didn’t set out wanting to be a Fed rep,” he said. “A colleague approached me and said, ‘have you considered being a Fed rep?’

“He said I was level-headed, sensible and approachable, which was nice to hear.

“It did make me stop and think because it wasn’t something I’d considered before.”
