Change Agents UK is a charity and not-for-profit organisation. Established in 1996, our charitable purpose is to promote public awareness and understanding of the principles of sustainability – and how to put them into practice in life and work. We work to achieve this through research, recruitment in the sustainability sector, resourcing and delivering sustainability projects and through our Gran

ts for Good programme that supports micro-initiatives in higher education and in communities. Experts in sustainability recruitment and members of the Recruitment and Employment Confederation (REC), we recruit exceptional people into roles working on sustainability projects or in ethical and responsible organisations in the public, private and third sectors. We work on a not-for-profit basis and can provide full employment services, training programmes that cover essential professional skills and sustainability-focused workshops. We support young people wishing to use their careers to make a positive difference. We run Sustainability Careers workshops with universities and provide opportunities for employers and graduates to expand their capabilities and horizons through our Internship programme. We also undertake research and resource and deliver sustainability projects independently and in partnership with others. We are outward-looking and always keen to form partnerships with other organisations who share our aims and vision.

As a specialist green recruiter we see a lot of AI being used in applications we receive... so how can you use AI effectively in job applications?

AI can be very useful in helping you tailor applications, ensuring you include key words that will help you get past the initial screening process. However, we see many applications that look almost identical.

The issue? People aren't reviewing and then editing the AI generated content. Please ensure you take some time to make amendments to the content so it actually reflects YOU.

If you've never used AI before for job applications and you'd like to try then try to be clear and specific with your prompts. An example of a prompt to use could be: "Compare this job description to my CV and identify which bullet points could be improved to better match the role."

Once you have produced your AI content read it out loud! If it doesn't sound like you and comes across as robotic then the rectruiter will think the same. Make as many edits as you need so it sounds like something you have written.

Finally, if you get through to the interview stage AI can be useful in helping you prep for this. You can use the job description and person specification to generate some possible interview questions. Although please be aware this isn't an exact science and you should be prepared for any manner of questions during interview...

As a small specialist recruiter we always read each application we receive individually. It may take longer, but the human eye can pick up transferrable skills and hidden talent much easier than AI can.

Ps. We LOVE receiving non-AI generated applications with a bit of flair. So if you're firmly in the no AI camp we're here for you!

AI is changing the way people hire. But are we pausing long enough to ask whether it's changing things for the better? As with anything game changing or new there's good and bad...

The good.... AI tools can screen hundreds of CVs in seconds, reducing human load and reducing time-to-hire dramatically. For high-volume roles, that's a big step forward. It gives recruiters back the time to do what humans do best: build relationships and make nuanced judgements about culture and potential.

The bad is.... AI models learn from the data you put in, and unless you can download the years of experience of your recruitment team it's going to miss some of those candidates that show absolute gold in their CV but perhaps haven't written it quite right to get picked up by AI. It also learns from past data, so if we've historically hired more men into engineering leadership, an AI trained on that pattern will quietly perpetuate it. "Objective" doesn't mean "fair." There's also the candidate experience to consider: being screened out by an algorithm, with no feedback and no human contact, is increasingly common and pretty brutal as a candidate. We risk optimising for efficiency at the expense of dignity.

The sustainable middle ground lies in treating AI as a tool that supports human judgement, not one that replaces it. That means auditing algorithms for bias, being transparent with candidates about how AI is used in your process, and keeping humans meaningfully in the loop especially at the point where consequential decisions are made.

For now, and the foreseeable future, Change Agents remains a proudly, 100% human recruitment and employment agency. We love getting to know our candidates and supporting them in their current and future applications.

What's your experience - are you or other organisations getting this balance right? We'd love to hear your thoughts. 👇

Overall, the green sector is continuing to grow 🌎

This is great news! However, the green sector is vast, encompassing many different industries and roles so we thought it would be useful to focus on the main areas of growth.

Firstly, the renewable energy sector. It continues to grow year on year which we love to see. But what are some of the main areas of growth? Well, probably unsurprisingly some of the jobs most in demand are hands on roles facilitating the infrastructure of these renewable projects. However, the good news is that this sector offers roles for every level of a career, including those looking to transition from another industry.

Next, sustainability roles. There is a growing demand for these roles and this likely reflects the integration of sustainability into both corporate strategies and operations.

So what sustainability roles are companies hiring for? Think sustainability analysts, corporate social responsibility, sustainable finance, ESG reporting etc.

Although the sustainability sector does offer entry level roles, it is often a highly competitive market so having both technical sustainability knowledge and business knowledge would help you succeed in entering this sector. If you’re fresh from university, we cannot recommend the importance of work experience. If you can undertake any internships whilst studying of shortly after we would highly recommend this approach.

Next, environmental protection. This area covers a vast range of roles and activities. Think environmental management, pollution control, flood risk etc. These roles encompass a vast range of skills and experience which is great for those with transferrable skills from other industries. However, bear in mind that certain roles such as an environmental manager may require a specific degree or qualification.

Want to get your career started in the green sector but not sure where to start? Join our FREE CV and Job applications session on Friday 5th June to find out some top tips for your future applications.

The green jobs market is growing fast. So is the competition.

If you're applying for sustainability, environment, or green economy roles, your CV needs to do more than list experience - it needs to show who you are and why it matters to you.

A few things that make the biggest difference:

✅ Address every point in the person specification - recruiters use it as a checklist
✅ Make it personal - authentic motivation stands out in this sector
✅ Show your values, not just your skills
✅ Structure it for ATS screening - keywords matter before a human ever sees it
✅ Keep it simple - every word should earn its place

And what to avoid? Hollow green jargon, over-designed formatting, and sending the same CV everywhere.

We've written a full guide with all the do's and don'ts — link to the blog in our profile.

Meet Erika,

She helped progress her career through attending the Skills Bootcamp in Sustainability and Environmental Management, delivered by us (Change Agents UK) and PECT.

Before starting the course, she was working as a receptionist. Whilst she enjoyed the people-focused aspect of the job, she had a growing interest in sustainability, especially as she was working in the David Attenborough Building, surrounded by organisations focused on conservation, research, and environmental action.

Erika is now working as a Sustainability & Projects Assistant for CCI Services. The Skills Bootcamp played a big role in helping her move into this role, as it gave her a much stronger understanding of sustainability and reframed the way she thinks about environmental issues, particularly in relation to building operations and how sustainability can be integrated into the running of complex shared workspace. It's also great that her managers were incredibly supportive throughout and encouraged her to take part in the course.

Want to hear more about Erika's journey from reception to sustainability?

Meet Michaela - our Change Agents UK Alumni Ambassador!

She hopes to help make this an active and beneficial network for Change Agents of the past, present and future.

So, what's her story?

Michaela's first job in the UK in sustainability was one of the internal roles at CAUK. Together with another colleague, they ran the WiSEE project. A fully funded project for women who wanted to run their own social or environmental enterprises.

Michaela says that it was "a fabulous experience and I stayed on for few years after. I worked in both a part-time and full time capacity, whatever project work was available I took it on, as I absolutely LOVED it. I loved the railway office, the people I met and the never-ending spirit of ‘sustainability optimism’ that we all had in common. "

Michaela has sinced moved onto new opportunities (still in sustainability - yay) but loves connecting and reconecting with other Change Agents.
