NT Live update - PL***OY OF THE WESTERN WORLD 30 MAY
First of all huge thanks to everyone who came to see Song Sung Blue last Saturday; we had a really good audience and all had a great time.
Now to our next screening, it's the National Theatre's production of Pl***oy of the Western World. I have to admit that apart from having heard of the play being a classic I had absolutely no idea what it was about, and assumed it was another American drama. How wrong could I be? (that's. not that unusual an event I have to admit!). So here goes.
Written in 1907 by John Millington Synge (who gave his name to Synge Street School, for those of us who saw Sing Street last year), it's a black comedy set in a pub in a small village on the west coast of County Mayo. A strange young man wanders in claiming to be on the run having murdered his da; far from being apprehended by the police this is embraced as the most exciting thing to have happened in years, especially by the ladies who start to throw themselves at him. Is he what he seems? You'll have to come and see the play! Filmed at the Lyttleton Theatre earlier this year, it stars Nicola Coughlan (Derry Girls & Bridgerton) and Siobham McSweeney (also Derry Girls) in a large cast. I loved Derry Girls, especially McSweeney as the mafioso nun head teacher, running the school as her own personal fiefdom; Coughlan was fantastic as the panicking schoolgirl always conflicted between doing the right thing and having a good time. So I think we're promised a pretty good time.
The box office is open now at www.exton-village-hall.com, as always it's just £12 per ticket which has to be the most amazing value for money ever. Book early!
