The Harley Staples Cancer Trust

The Harley Staples Cancer Trust Registered Charity no.1138464 Our charity The Harley Staples Cancer Trust is in loving memory of our beautiful, inspirational boy Harley.

Harley was diagnosed with a rare leukaemia: B cell Acute Lymphoblastic Leukaemia Birkitt Type on January 28th 2009. During his illness Harley was incredibly brave, he smiled and laughed every day. We never knew what each day in hospital would bring. There were so many tests, so much treatment and medicine for Harley to have, all to try and make him better. Despite this he faced each day like a br

ave soldier. Harley made many friends in the hospital and he helped the other children to face each day and their treatment, and they helped him too. We know that Harley would want us to continue to help his friends who are still battling with their illnesses and any other children who have to live and fight a potentially life threatening illness. ** Happy Harley's Holiday Homes **
These are available FREE to children and young people up to age 21 to use and enjoy with their families to create happy memories to cherish and offer fresh air and respite away from the hospital. We also extend this to bereaved parents who have lost a child to cancer. We have Harley's caravan in Overstrand, Norfolk for holidays by the sea, open April-October. We have Harley's House in Rutland open all year, a stones throw from Rutland Water and the market towns of Stamford and Oakham. Both have 3 bedrooms and sleep 6. Priority goes to children on current treatment and children with a terminal diagnosis. We will do our best to accommodate all children subject to availability. To take a break with us email [email protected] or contact your Clic Sargent worker who can make a referral for you. Please advise where your child is with their treatment programme upon application. We understand how difficult it is for families trying to live and cope when a child is diagnosed with a potentially life threatening illness and we aim to put a smile on the children's faces whilst they battle this horrendous disease. Thank you all so much for your support xx

Well lovely supporters of The Harley Staples Cancer Trust, I know that we can be very quiet but believe me we have lots going on with the charity and our research projects. This week we had a teams meeting with an incredible lady called Dr Lisa Russell. We have been put in touch with her by our friends at Children's Cancer and Leukaemia Group - CCLG. Now bear with me because this post may be long but it is so important.

For many years Lisa has been working on rare children's cancers that are very similar to what Harley had. When Harley was diagnosed, the consultants had to decide which treatment program to put him on, did he have a lymphoma or a leukaemia and as the ridiculously long title of his illness suggests, B cell acute lymphoblastic leukaemia Burkitt type, it sounds hard to know. We now know that to this day, consultants don't know. They are guessing which treatment programmes to put children on, which as you can imagine astounded us!

Now let me just say that I've never doubted Harley's consultant and I know that he always did what he thought was the best he could for Harley. But at the same time he was guessing which treatment program to use.

Now when Lisa found this out she immediately questioned this and asked all the questions as to what research is needed to find this answer. She spent the first 7 years of her research looking into just this at her own time and expense with no funding at all. As a result of her research Lisa has since discovered the point at which the b cells start to go wrong, and the timing of this is the deciding factor as to whether a child needs a leukaemia or lymphoma treatment program or both. Believe me, this is an incredible discovery and will make a massive difference to the treatment for any child suffering from these types of rare cancer's.

Research is ongoing and trials are in place as we speak but I can't stress enough how important funding for research projects is and why we at The Harley Staples Cancer Trust are funding research projects into rare children's cancer's.

Please if you're considering any fundraising, any crazy event, a charity donation instead of Christmas cards/pressies, please consider donating to us. You can donate via Harley Staples at PayPal or directly to Harley's account, just message me for details. All money from donations will be going to incredibly important cancer research.

Thank you for reading and thanks for your support xx

Whissendine Church of England Primary School have chosen The Harley Staples Cancer Trust as their charity to support this year. Gabriel and Annabelle had to stand up in front of the whole school and tell everyone all about Harley, their big brother and all about our charity. I was so very proud of them. Today the whole school are wearing their pyjamas to raise funds towards our next research project into rare children's cancer's. I hope that you're all feeling cosy and warm today Whissendine school.
