In a world-first observation, scientists have witnessed evolution in action with the Australian three-toed skink (Saiphos equalis).

This unique lizard species is "bimodally reproductive," meaning some populations lay eggs while others give birth to live young.

Remarkably, researchers documented a single female laying three eggs and then giving birth to a live baby from the same pregnancy.

This rare versatility suggests the species may be in the middle of an evolutionary transition between different birthing methods.

Being able to switch could allow these lizards to better survive changing environmental conditions.

Both the friends of whittleford park page and group are linked.

I have added a few admin and moderators to help out with the running and maintaining of these.

It would be nice to arrange an event this summer.

Maybe using one of the local community centre or local bussiness in the surrounding areas to help.

Happy Satunalia December 17 to December 23

Saturnalia is an ancient Roman festival and holiday in honour of the god Saturn, held on 17 December in the Julian calendar and later expanded with festivities until 19 December.

By the 1st century BC, the celebration had been extended until 23 December, for a total of seven days of festivities. The holiday was celebrated with a sacrifice at the Temple of Saturn, in the Roman Forum, and a public banquet, followed by private gift-giving, continual partying, and a carnival atmosphere that overturned Roman social norms: gambling was permitted, and masters provided table service for their slaves as it was seen as a time of liberty for both slaves and freedmen alike.

A common custom was the election of a "King of the Saturnalia", who gave orders to people, which were followed and presided over the merrymaking. The gifts exchanged were usually gag gifts or small figurines made of wax or pottery known as sigillaria. The poet Catullus called it "the best of days".

Over the summer please becareful when going on local country walks. Their have been sightings of Giant Hogweed. Any sightings of this should be reported to Nuneaton and Bedworth Borough Council or Canal and River Trust.
