Nottingham Medico-Chirurgical Society

Nottingham Medico-Chirurgical Society The Society is active in hosting a wide range of lectures on a range of subjects, both medical and non-medical, and in organising social activities.

Membership currently consists of around 650 Nottinghamshire GPs and consultants. The Nottingham Medico-Chirurgical Society was established in 1828 making it one of the oldest medical societies in the UK. It was originally conceived as a way of providing medical education for the whole community. Over the years its' role has changed and although it is still active in supporting post graduate educat

ion, it also hosts a wide range of lectures on a range of subjects from progress in the field of medicine through to the experience of participating in the in the Olympic games and being a surgeon on a battle field. As well as presenting several educational meetings a year it hosts both regular and exciting ‘one-off’ social events from ball’s, to concerts, quiz nights, monthly book club, bike rides and walks, strengthening friendships and links between doctors working within both primary and secondary care and members of the non medical community. The doors are always open to new members and the society is keen to expand over the next few years. Doctors in training are welcome to join during their time in the region and medical students are invited to get involved through the educational meetings and joint events with the University. This year’s President, Mr John Rowson, has put together a programme of lectures and events both educational and entertaining for members and guests to enjoy. This starts off with his Presidential Lecture, Meanderings - A wander through a life in Medicine on 22 September. Details of all events can be found on the Med Chi Website or by contacting Jane Turner

The Society is able to continue to support doctors in training and medical students via several medical travel and research bursaries each year. The society offers medical students’ prizes and elective bursaries and has aided international doctors in developing specialist skills for which training is not available in their home countries. Med Chi also supports both local and national nominated charities. Over the past few years the society has raised many thousands of pounds. This year the president’s charity is 'Changing Faces'.
