Do you know what counts as a hate crime? It's not always obvious...

A hate crime is a criminal offence motivated by prejudice or hostility towards someone because of their actual or perceived:
• Race
• Religion
• Disability
• Sexual orientation
• Transgender identity

It's not just physical violence. It also includes threats, harassment, assault, criminal damage and other offences.

If you experience something you believe is motivated by hate or prejudice, you can tell the police when reporting it. Every report matters.

Every report builds the picture that helps police and councils direct resources where hate crime is happening. Remember that you do not have to be a victim to report a hate crime. Witnesses can do it too.

One year ago, we were proud to stand alongside partners in supporting the Manifesto for Change and its call for a coordinated, evidence-based response to hate crime.

Today, that collective work takes an exciting step forward with the launch of the new Manifesto for Change film—created by the team at Approaches and fellow partners.

The Manifesto for Change was built through collaboration between researchers, practitioners, people with lived experience, policymakers and civil society organisations.

We were pleased to contribute to this initiative and welcome the launch of a new short film that makes the Manifesto's key messages accessible to wider audiences.

With hate crime on the rise and community support services stretched, this short film cuts straight to the core issues: tackling under-reporting, backing victims, and delivering practical solutions that work.

Huge credit to the team behind the campaign for keeping this vital conversation moving from policy papers to Parliament, and now to a wider public audience.

Day 1 of National Hate Crime Awareness Week

It can be verbal abuse, online harassment, vandalism, or physical violence. It's never the
victim's fault, and it's always worth reporting. You don't need to prove the motive. If a witness,
or even a police officer, believed it was hate-related, that's enough.

If you see hate, report it.
SEE • REPORT • SUPPORT
If you witness a hate crime, you must report it.
You don’t have to decide whether it legally counts as a hate crime. Tell someone what happened and let the police assess it.
