Sea Scout Armada Invasion

Beeston Rylands based 2nd Beeston Sea Scouts have taken to the river in style, launching a flotilla of kayaks, paddleboards and powerboats from Beeston's celebrated Marina to make their way upstream to their island water base on the Trent for the start of the summer season.

But before the armada set off, the group gathered for a rather special moment. Moored at the Marina is a genuine WW2 American landing craft, a Higgins Boat, the same type of vessel that carried troops ashore at D-Day on 6th June 1944 and was later immortalised in Saving Private Ryan and The Monuments Men. With special permission to board, the scouts assembled on its deck before setting out on their own considerably more peaceful invasion upstream to Barton Island near Attenborough.

Joining the group for the evening was Martin Clegg, Deputy Lieutenant of Nottinghamshire, who made the full voyage to the island and back. He said:

"You have an amazing facility there. It is clear just how much the volunteers give of themselves, week in, week out, to make it all happen for the young people of this community."

Formed in 1928, 2nd Beeston Sea Scouts give young people aged 4 to 18 the chance to build water confidence and develop seamanship skills throughout the summer months. They operate from the secluded Barton Island, accessible only by water, on the Trent upstream near Attenborough, as well as from their Lilac Grove HQ in Beeston Rylands.

The group has grown considerably in recent years and now has over 90 young members, with waiting lists across its sections, from 4-18yrs of age. Summer activities range from kayaking and canoeing to paddleboarding and open water adventures.

With a three-discipline challenge event on the Trent planned for June and overnight island camps through the summer, 2026 promises to be one of the group's most ambitious seasons yet. New members and young people interested in joining arewelcome to get in touch at www.2ndbeeston.org.uk.

πŸ† HISTORY HAS BEEN REPEATED – 2ND BEESTON ARE NATIONAL CHAMPIONS... AGAIN! πŸ†

We went to HMS Raleigh with a title to defend, and our incredible Sea Scouts and Explorers didn't just meet the challenge, they crushed it! For the second year in a row, the prestigious Otter Shield is coming back to Lilac Grove! 🌊πŸ”₯

After making history last year by winning it for the first time in 97 years, our team proved they are a force to be reckoned with by securing the top spot once more. βš“βœ¨

πŸ₯‡ The Medal Haul πŸ₯‡
Our Scouts and Explorers dominated the lanes against the best Sea Scout groups from across the UK. Check out these results:

- U12 Individual: πŸ₯‡ GOLD in Backstroke & πŸ₯‡ GOLD in Freestyle
- U12 Team: πŸ₯ˆ SILVER in Medley & πŸ₯ˆ 2nd Best Overall U12 Team
- U14 Individual: πŸ₯‡ GOLD in Backstroke & πŸ₯ˆ SILVER in Breaststroke
- U14 Team: πŸ₯‡ GOLD in Medley & πŸ₯‡ 1st Best Overall U14 Team
- Squadron Relay: πŸ₯‡ GOLD
- Line Throw: πŸ₯ˆ SILVER
- U16 Individual: πŸ₯‡ GOLD in Backstroke & πŸ₯‰ BRONZE in Breaststroke
- πŸ† THE OTTER SHIELD: WINNERS! πŸ†

A huge well done to our older Explorers who put in a massive effort against some incredibly fierce national competition! πŸš€

β€‹βš“ WE NEED YOU ON DECK! βš“
Seeing our Scouts reach these heights is exactly why we volunteer, but to keep this momentum going, we need more adults to join the crew. Whether you are a seasoned sailor or have never set foot on a boat, we need your skills! How you can help:
- Nautical Knowledge: If you have skills in sailing, rowing, powerboating, or paddlesports, we’d love your help getting our Scouts water-ready. β›΅
- Organisational Wizards: Not a fan of the water? No problem! We need help behind the scenes with event planning, logistics, and admin to keep the unit moving. πŸ“‹
- General Support: Just a spare few hours a month makes a massive difference to what these kids can achieve.

β€‹πŸ™Œ A Huge Team Effort πŸ™Œ
A huge thank you goes out to our volunteer team for organising and preparing everything required for this evening. A special mention goes to Eamonn for the months of training, and to Samuel, Nige, and Haydn for supporting the Scouts and Explorers throughout the weekend.

The Otter Shield is being engraved as we speak, and it will soon be back on display at Lilac Grove for everyone to see. It’s huge, it’s heavy, and it’s OURS!

Well done to every single one of you! πŸŽ‰πŸŽŠ
