Depression, particularly in combination with anxiety, is a leading combination of disability worldwide, while prescription of antidepressant medication of dubious long-term efficacy continues to increase year on year.
We desperately need new approaches for treating this condition.
The Beckley/Imperial Research Programme's groundbreaking research in 2016 paved the way for a new era of medication, showing a significant, lasting positive effect of psilocybin, the active ingredient of magic mushrooms.
However, while millions of people struggle with depression, and while other countries start to consider decriminalisation, the UK continues to group psilocybin as a Class A drug, officially considered to have no medical benefit.
This has to change.
