Homelessness often begins long before a young person leaves home.
Family breakdown is the leading cause of youth homelessness in the UK.
At 16, Reconnect worker Kerry’s relationship with her mum broke down; for the next two years, she moved between friends’ sofas and her grandmother’s house.
Today, she helps other young people avoid the same path - through Depaul UK’s education workshops and Reconnect family mediation service.
“I can now see it from my mum’s perspective,” Kerry says. “She did try. But she didn’t have enough support, and neither did I.”
Recognising the signs early, and having somewhere for families to turn, can change what happens next.
