Nottingham Refugee Week Co-ordinating, promoting & supporting events with, by & for local communities as part of National Re

Refugee Week happens nationally every June, with events anchored around World Refugee Day (20th). Refugee Week is an act of welcome, a gesture of solidarity & a shared celebration. In Nottingham we work to raise awareness of the reasons why people are forced to seek refuge – persecution, war, poverty and conflict – & also celebrate the many positive contributions people seeking refuge & asylum mak

e to the economic, cultural & social life of the city. Nottingham Refugee Week is supported by brilliant city-wide partners from different sectors including the arts, social care and support services, sport and the food/hospitality industry. Please get in touch if you are an organisation/group who would like to host a local event or support in any other way including volunteering, fundraising & marketing/promotion. Our message to the arts & culture sector: will you join us and show Courage for Refugee Week 2026?

Refugee Week marks 75 years since the UN Refugee Convention – a commitment that people forced to flee deserve protection, dignity and hope.

But right now refugees in the UK and globally face rising hostility, as well as the communities that support them. So now more than ever, art and culture matter.

In 2025, Refugee Week saw 15,000+ activities & events, participation across 20+ countries, 2.3 million attendees, and involvement from 1,000 schools, 500 libraries and 100 local authorities. And we're going to make Refugee Week 2026 (15-21 June) even bigger!

Want to take part? From programming to platforming, partnerships and more, you can play a vital part.

Let us know you plan to take part by completing our Expression of Interest form - link in bio & tagged on stories.

Did you know a refugee helped inspire Elphaba’s look in the ?

For , it was important to use micro braids for her character, Elphaba, to honour Black women.

For Marie Josée Mampuya-Yonda, who came to the UK as a Congolese refugee, the invitation to support a talented team of many working on the various intricate braids and wigs was a recognition of her dedication and hard work.

Marie Josée has mentored and supported other refugee women since opening her salon over 30 years ago, helping them build their lives and careers, and she's determined to continue giving back to the community that welcomed and supported her in North London.

Hosted by Refugee Roots Women’s Group, we join them in warmly inviting you to a morning of Bollywood Dance 💃, with Gualra Dlixat, on Tue 17 Jun, 10.30am-12pm.

This is a women’s dance session. We are an inclusive space and all women are welcome - No previous dance experience required, just come and enjoy the music and movement.

Later in the week on Sun 22 Jun 5pm-8pm, we invite you to bring the Refugee Week celebrations to a close with a special evening of music from across the globe with DJ Mayeva and DJ Simba.
Be together with music and celebrated the world, our city and the people in it. 🤩
