So, What Causes VHL?

* VHL is caused by a mutation in the VHL gene, which normally helps regulate cell growth and prevent tumors.
* It follows an autosomal dominant inheritance pattern — if one parent carries the mutation, each child has about a 50% chance of inheriting it.
* Around 20 % of cases result from new (spontaneous) mutations rather than inherited ones

🩵MAY IS VHL AWARENESS MONTH🩵

This month, we’re helping raise awareness for Von Hippel-Lindau (VHL) disease — a rare lifelong genetic condition that affects approximately 1 in 36,000 births.

VHL can cause blood vessel tumours to develop in up to ten areas of the body, with tumours being either benign or cancerous. The average age of diagnosis is just 25 years old, highlighting the importance of awareness, education, and early detection.

By sharing information, supporting organisations, and starting conversations, we can help make a difference for individuals and families living with VHL
