Our Story
CALM is Countryside Access for the Less Mobile. Associate Membership is available to everyone regardless of disabilities. Our aim is for Able Bodied members to assist those less mobile to get out into the countryside so that together they can appreciate the Countryside as it should be enjoyed. Disabilities play a large part in stopping people visiting the Countryside be it from someone that isn’t capable of walking through to Agoraphobics that can feel safe enough in a vehicle. Maybe it is old age or infirmity that has stopped someone from enjoying the Countryside and we can work together with them to get them back “out there” CALM is in fact a re-branding of DORA, Disabled Off Road Access, that has been running for many years. The re-branding was needed to ensure the long term future of the organisation given the fact that “Off Road” is frowned upon. We will continue to assist and protect the rights for ALL whilst enhancing those of the disabled via Lobbying and working with Local Authorities as well as offering personal support where we can. Our intention is to build a network of advisers representing CALM.
What are our initial aims?
We aim to ensure that CALM is inclusive and as well as promoting access for the disabled, we will be promoting family use of the countryside, in a responsible manner. Let there be no doubt that CALM abhors illegal and irresponsible use and therefore condemns it. As with all other groups involved in protecting rights we believe that education is the key and would hope that peer pressure may make a difference. We are already working with some Local Authorities on their Right Of Way Improvement Plans (ROWIP). Working together with able bodied members and disabled members we can include and benefit everyone in the countryside by being inclusive. We are looking to put in place Regional Representatives and have already recruited a number of people with the knowledge and experience to fulfil those roles. We are also looking to bring on board clubs that are willing to work with us and allow us to bring back our Road Shows that are based on giving access for the disabled to give them the experience of taking vehicles off tarmac and into the countryside.
