UNISON is the UK’s largest trade union, serving more than 1.3 million members. We represent full-time and part-time staff who provide public services, although they may be employed in both the public and private sectors. The East Midlands region covers branches in Lincolnshire, Nottinghamshire, Northamptonshire, Leicestershire, and Derbyshire.

UNISON members’ fight is working — but Saint Ralph Sherwin still needs to do more.

After 10 days of strike action across 14 schools, members have secured:
✅ Protection of 52-week contracts
✅ Protection of all existing banding

But what about the hardworking, lowest-paid staff still being left behind?

❌What about lunchtime supervisors whose jobs are being cut with no replacement?
❌What about teaching assistants covering classes while struggling to make ends meet?
❌What about others like chaplaincy and SEND staff being stretched beyond breaking point?
❌ What about badly managed HR processes?

These are the people who keep schools running and they have had enough of bad practice and poor treatment.

UNISON members have already shown that collective action gets results — now it’s time to finish the job and win fairness for every school worker.

Next week, UNISON members will take further strike action — and they need your support.

Join them at the Diocesan Centre and help send a clear message: more must be done.

🚨 REJECT 🚨

Local government unions have rejected the 2026 pay offer and are demanding meaningful pay negotiations in a letter to employers signed by all three unions - UNISON, Unite and GMB.

School and council workers’ jobs aren’t getting any easier — and their pay isn’t getting any better. Something needs to change.

Work in a school or council? Watch this space.

UNISON are balloting members for strike action from 9 July.

Just a few snippets of some of the incredible teaching assistants, 1:1s, chaplaincy staff, midday supervisors, and many more UNISON members at Saint Ralph Sherwin Catholic Multi Academy Trust who continue to fight for a better future for their schools and communities — marking another three days of strike action this week.

A round-up of their actions this week vs. their employer:

UNISON Members:

✅ Nearly six months of telling the Trust and Catholic Diocese that these proposals will not work for the future of these Catholic schools — even taking their message outside the Cathedral.
✅ Standing up for the future of their schools, while working with parents, governors, and the wider community to make sure children’s voices are heard.
✅ Continuing to ask the Trust to listen and properly negotiate so the dispute can be resolved.

Their Employer:

❌Meeting with staff and unions, but still refusing to engage in meaningful negotiations to resolve the dispute.
❌ Radio silence on who will pick up the pieces after staff redundancies, and how schools will continue to operate safely.
❌ Advertising new roles during the dispute, including a £95k Director of People post.
❌ Sending redundancy letters to the wrong members of staff.
❌ Beginning new proposals affecting chaplaincy staff with no notice.
❌ Asking governors to cover the work of striking staff.

Do better, Saint Ralph Sherwin.

More to follow soon ✊

✊ 10 days ✊

By the end of this week, members at Saint Ralph Sherwin will have taken 10 days of strike action in their fight for fairness — for both the children they support every day and for them as some of the lowest paid staff in schools.

Teaching Assistants, Midday Supervisors, 1:1’s, Chaplaincy Staff and many more go above and beyond daily. They are the people who notice when a child needs extra support, encouragement, praise, or simply an adult to ask if they’re okay.

This dispute is about making sure that children continue to get that support and that schools remain safe and properly staffed. This is not a fight for more — it is a fight for fairness.

Please stand with them. Show your support on the picket lines and let staff know that you’re behind them💜

A hard-earned victory for school support staff 🔥🤝

After 4 days of strike action, members at Our Lady of Lourdes Schools have secured a 12-point agreement including:

✅ No compulsory redundancies
✅ Protection of pay, hours and roles
✅ Enhanced pay protection arrangements

Emma Roberts, Head of Local Government, said:

“This dispute shows the power of school support staff coming together through their union — many for the first time — to stand up for their jobs, pay and conditions.

Too often, school support staff facing restructures and redundancies are made to feel they have no choice but to accept what is happening. These members proved that when workers organise collectively, they can win real change and protect the jobs they love, while continuing to support pupils and school communities.”

Andrea Egan Unison General Secretary has spoken out in support of Tom Barker following his suspension by Discovery Schools Academy Trust.

Tom is a dedicated teaching assistant who has supported vulnerable children at Ash Field Academy for nearly a decade and has been a tireless campaigner for fair pay and safe staffing.

Trade unionists should never be victimised for standing up for workers.

Solidarity to all staff taking strike action on 13th and 14th May in support of Tom ✊

Solidarity with school support staff at St Ralph Sherwin Catholic Multi Academy Trust who are still striking to protect jobs, pay, and conditions, and defend the future of education for children ✊

This video captures fantastic speeches from staff at Chesterfield May Day and a demonstration in Derby yesterday.

So far, staff have taken 7 days of strike action in defence of their schools, their colleagues, and the children they support every day 📚

In January, support staff were told there were proposals to:
❌ Cut their hours
❌ Reduce their pay
❌ Increase workloads
❌ Shorten lunch breaks
❌ Make staff redundant
❌ Force people to interview to keep the jobs they already do

These are the staff who keep schools running every single day, and they deserve respect, security, and a voice in the future of our schools 💜

📍 Next strike dates: 19th 20th and 21st May 🪧

07/05/2026

Another day, another picket ✊

Rachel Hodson, UNISON Regional Secretary for the East Midlands, joined Barbara, Lead UNISON Rep at Saint Ralph Sherwin, alongside her colleagues and fellow members who work day in, day out to support the children in their school.

These staff want nothing but the very best support and education for pupils, and they are right to ask why they should be expected to deliver this for less pay, with fewer staff and on worse terms and conditions.

💜Solidarity with our school support staff
