Inclusive Food

Inclusive Food We are researchers based at the University of Bristol and the University of Nottingham. We met in 2012 and have been friends and colleagues since.

We are interested in food supply chains, the people involved in them and farming to fork practices. We are passionate about driving change for better food systems, by which we mean food systems that work in harmony with nature and are socially inclusive and equitable. We work together wherever possible, supporting each other in professional and personal spaces.

๐ŸŽ ๐Ÿงƒ Are you a farmer/grower of apples, or involved in any part of the apple supply chain, from growing, to packing, processing and distributing?

๐Ÿ’ก ๐Ÿ’ญ Join us and share your thoughts on developing circularity within the food system.

๐ŸŒณ ๐Ÿ” As part of our EPSRC funded project between the University of Nottingham and the University of Bristol we are hosting a series of workshops to bring together the voices of different actors from across the apple supply chain.

๐Ÿช‘ ๐Ÿ’ฌ We are hosting workshops both online and in person across the South West and the East Midlands.

Our core values sit at the heart of all we do and are firmly rooted in respect of nature, the belief of solidarity, fairness, inclusivity, and integrity. We also challenge ourselves and have fun.๐Ÿƒ

Weโ€™re passionate about engaged approaches to research, which enable collaborating with traditionally marginalised stakeholders to shape future imaginings and practice.

Did you know harnessing the power of simpler diets with less ultra-processed foods where possible can help to improve wellbeing and help the environment? ๐Ÿฝ๏ธ

We aim to provide easily accessible information to consider a move away from ultra-processed diets that can help lower the energy and overall environmental cost, and reliance on large food corporations.

Research from the Food and Agricultural Organisation shows that over 90% of crop varieties in the farming industry have been lost over the last century, a decline that's linked to large scale farming. ๐ŸŒฝ

This increases the environmental cost of growing food, as ecosystems are altered to suit the limited variety of crops.

We must rethink our food systems.

We've come to rely on extended food supply chains and we simply canโ€™t carry on as we have. ๐ŸŠ

We believe transforming food supply chains is critical for improving the ecological resilience of the UK food systems but also to make them more equitable.

Who controls our food supply chains and why is it a problem? ๐Ÿ‡

Parties in the food supply chain have the power to influence others and their practices. For example, a retailer may be able to dictate the price of produce, which impacts farmers.

As they grow longer, and span multiple places, food systems become extended networks.

They consist of interconnections between food producers, manufacturers, retailers, consumers and regulators.

The forces of globalisation and industrialisation have centred power in the hands of a few corporations dictating the way food is produced, consumed and organized. We believe the time is ripe for change.

A key part of understanding how to change current food systems lies in understanding food supply chains and how they impact us all.

But what is a food supply chain? ๐Ÿฎ

A supply chain is a series of connected practices that move a good from where it is grown/produced to where it is consumed, and beyond.

Itโ€™s made up of relationships between the different people and organisations who are connected through the growing, producing, moving, packaging, processing, storing, cooking, selling, consuming and end-of-life.

Supply chains can be as simple as growers selling to consumers, or much more complex.
