UKNA is pleased to share two new short films developed as part of People, Place and Practice: Four Happenings; an intra-regional, multi-site residency programme designed to explore local context, collaboration, and creative process across the East Midlands 🎬

The films, beautifully documented by Derby-based creative Maya Saengkrachang, offer insight into how the programme unfolded – from the first day the artists came together in Derby, to a closer look at the Language of Objects residency hosted at Artcore in Derby.

📌 Film One: Day One – Derby Gathering
Captures the opening day of the programme, where all sixteen artists came together at Artcore in Derby. Facilitated by Sophie Mak-Schram, this gathering offered space to share practices, connect, and begin a collaborative journey that unfolded across four cities.

📌 Film Two: Derby Residency – Language of Objects
Follows four artists – Maya Rose Edwards, Oliver Getley, Hannaa Hamdache, and Felipe Pineda – during the Derby-based residency led by Theo Vasiloudes. Through conversation and creative experimentation, the group explored how objects carry personal and collective meaning.

Our final reflection from 'People, Place and Practice: Four Happenings' programme takes us to Nottingham for the Language of Machines residency 💡

Led by Raheel Khan, artists Sarah Al-Sarraj, Alexander Lea, Helen Li Newbold, John Whall explored how we engage with technology, systems, and digital landscapes in creative practice. This past February, the residency was based in an old factory, where artists unpacked the ways machines shape our interactions, daily lives, and creative practice.

As part of their research, the artists explored the Samuel Morley archive at Backlit Gallery, which became a key inspiration for their collaborative process. This informed a large-scale installation combining digital media and sound, which will be shared at our 'Shaping the Future of People, Place and Practice' symposium happening TOMORROW (!!!) Thursday 3rd April 2025.

A huge thank you to Backlit Gallery for their support in making this residency possible ❤

Third up in our 'People, Place and Practice: Four Happenings' reflections is the Language of People residency, which took place in Lincoln this past February 🙋‍♂️🙋‍♀️

Artists Koko Brown, Jeremy Chih-Hao Chuang, Angharad Jones-Young, and Kristina Nenova, led by Courtney Conrad, explored how we capture a place through the people who move through it. Taking time to observe Lincoln, they engaged in conversation, listened to snippets of dialogue, and responded to the city's rhythm through writing, movement, and sound.

During their time in Lincoln, the artists immersed themselves in the city; they experienced Lincoln Lights by Threshold Studios, visited 'How We Find Out Who We Are' exhibition by Toil & Trouble at Project Space Plus University of Lincoln, and gained insights into the development of Barbican Creative Hub. These moments of observation, interaction, and creativity culminated in a final collaborative piece, weaving together words, photography, and movement which will be shared at our ‘Shaping the Future of People, Place and Practice’ symposium on Thursday 3 April 2025.

A huge thank you to Lincoln Museum and Usher Gallery and Lincoln Arts Centre for being key partners in our People, Place and Practice programmes ❤️

Next up in our People, Place and Practice: Four Happenings reflections is the Language of Objects residency in Derby 🗝️

Artists Maya Rose Edwards, Oliver Getley, Hannaa Hamdache and Felipe Pineda, led by Theo Vasiloudes, explored how the things we collect, keep and create shape both our personal and collective narratives.

Based at Artcore, the artists reflected on the meaning of objects — questioning what gives them significance, and even debated whether a squirrel is chaotic good or lawful neutral (still unresolved - help us settle it in the comments)👇

They smelled an orange, uncovered stories behind old and new objects, and took a deep dive into the unexpected cultural rabbit hole of “Alan and Barry”, a crafty duo who were popular in the early 2000s.

The residency culminated in a curated cabinet of found objects exhibited at Artcore for two weeks. A reimagining of this display will be presented at our 'Shaping the Future of People, Place and Practice' symposium on Thursday 3rd April at Backlit Gallery

As we begin sharing reflections from our 'People, Place and Practice: Four Happenings' programme, we’re looking back on an extraordinary, exhilarating, and fun-filled weekend of learning in February, all themed around the Art of Language.

📜First up: Language of History 📜

This residency explored the ways in which the past and present intertwine — how we carry stories through objects, landscapes, and movement, and how artists can respond to these layered histories today.

Traversing two sites in North Nottinghamshire, artists Elaheh Raofi, Sky Su, Meriem Jouti, Ruby Waage Townsend, led by Harry Clayton-Wright, traced time through relics and stories. From discovering witch marks and Ice Age art at Creswell Crags, to standing before the very earring worn by Charles I at his ex*****on, the group immersed themselves in place and history.

The artists foraged, improvised through dance, and responded with writing, movement, and meaningful conversation — finding new ways to connect with the past.

We would like to extend a huge thank you The Harley Foundation, Creswell Crags and a special shoutout to John – the world’s greatest tour guide!

Stay tuned as we share more from our Four Happenings programme over the coming weeks, and don’t forget to join us for our Shaping the Future of People, Place and Practice symposium on Thursday 3rd April 2025 at Backlit Gallery.

20/03/2025

As our first ever intra-regional ‘People, Place and Practice: Four Happenings’ programme across the East Midlands comes to a close, we will be sharing reflections over the coming weeks from four residencies held in four locations during one weekend in February.

Over the past three years and across three iterations, UKNA has brought together 45 artists through residencies, gatherings, and shared experiences, inspiring new ways of thinking and working. Made possible with the support of our partners, these opportunities have sparked fresh ideas, preserved cultural narratives, and helped shape an ever-evolving creative landscape for artists.

Join us on Thursday 3rd April 2025, for the third edition of ‘Shaping the Future: People, Place and Practice’ symposium - a chance to reflect on our journey across nine locations over three years, learn more about the programme, and explore its future.
