A little bit of History...
The allotments you see today used to be owned by British Coal... They also owned the plantation which was sold in 1987. Individual members then approached British Coal in an attempt to purchase their own allotment plots. This was met with opposition but British Coal did agree to sell the allotments if the members formed an association. On the 23rd September 1987 the Allotment Holders Association was established and on the 1st of September 1989 we officially became the owners. The plot is 3.09 acres and cost £3000 to buy. The association is now run by 3 trustees and a committee, some of whom grew up with fathers and grandfathers gardening the plots that they themselves work on today.
