Because Disabled Parents Have a Right to Family Life Too.....
Disabled Parents’ Political Union was set up in response to 20 years of discrimination experienced by a disabled mother of five. Despite it being 2018, there is NO legislation to protect disabled parents in their parenting roles and professionals misuse the ‘capacity’ phrase in the Children’s Act 1989 to interrogate disabled parents and deny them the right to a peaceful family life.
Authorities say they *have to* question parents with disabilities despite the fact that the Children’s Act does not mention the word disability in relation to capacity. This assumption is based entirely on personal prejudice. The Equality Act allows this discrimination by default because there is no section in it to prevent prejudice to disabled parents.
This attitude belongs in the time of Dickens, not in the 21st century and we will continue to pressure the government until the laws are changed to give ALL equal rights to a family.
