Last Thursday, members of Carlton Rotary enjoyed a fascinating visit to the Hucknall Flight Test Museum ✈️

The site has a proud aviation heritage dating back to the early 1900s. It became especially significant through its association with Rolls-Royce, where decades of pioneering engine development and testing took place.

A real highlight of the afternoon was learning about the remarkable aircraft engines developed and tested at Hucknall. These included piston engines like the famous Merlin, which powered iconic aircraft such as the Spitfire and Hurricane during the Second World War. We also explored the evolution into the jet age, with early jet engines such as the Welland and Derwent helping to shape the future of aviation.

The museum’s collection brings this history to life, showcasing engine components, technical displays, and stories of the engineers and test pilots who pushed the boundaries of innovation.

A big thank you to the dedicated volunteers who shared their knowledge and made the visit so engaging – a fantastic insight into an important part of our local heritage.

Thank you to our member David Styles for arranging the visit.

Last Thursday (7th May), members of Carlton Rotary were delighted to welcome Alan Barnes, accompanied by his wonderful guide dog, Windsor.

Alan gave a truly inspiring and insightful talk about the vital work of guide dogs, sharing his own personal experiences of living with sight loss and how Windsor has transformed his independence and day-to-day life. It was both a moving and informative evening, giving us all a greater understanding of the challenges faced by those with visual impairments—and the incredible difference that guide dogs make.

Windsor was, of course, impeccably behaved and quickly became a firm favourite with everyone in the room!

A huge thank you to Alan for taking the time to speak to us and for answering our many questions so openly and honestly.

A huge thank you to the incredible generosity of our supporters! 🙌

Following our recent appeal for help with a replacement laptop and projector, we’re absolutely delighted to share that we have received not just one — but two complete sets!

Firstly, a big thank you to past member Jack Tweed for kindly donating a laptop and projector.

We would also like to thank Lindleys Autocentres for their generous donation of another laptop and projector.

Thanks to this fantastic support, we are now in a brilliant position — with one set available for our regular meeting venue, and another we can use when delivering presentations out in the community.

Your generosity helps us continue our work supporting local causes and delivering engaging meetings and events.

Thank you once again — your support truly makes a difference. 💙

🌿 Carlton Rotary Making a Difference in Netherfield 🌿

On 27th March 2026, thirteen Rotarians and friends took to the streets of Netherfield for a community litter pick, kindly supported by Councillor Alison Hunt.

After a rather wet start to the morning, the sun made a welcome appearance—perfect timing for what turned into a successful and highly productive effort! ☀🧹

It was especially wonderful to see the young daughter of one of our members, along with two of her friends, getting involved. Their enthusiasm and sense of adventure were truly inspiring and a great reminder of the importance of encouraging the next generation to care for their local environment. 💚

A big thank you to everyone who took part—together we’re helping to keep our community clean and green! 🌍

🚶‍♂️ Carlton Rotary Guided City Walk – Thursday 26th March 🌆

Today, members of Carlton Rotary enjoyed a fantastic guided city walk, kindly organised by our Joint President, David Falkner.

We began at the Sir John Borlase Warren pub at Canning Circus, before heading through the park and exploring the fascinating tunnel. Along the way, we stopped at the Playhouse Mirror, a striking and unique feature in the city, before continuing into Nottingham.

We also took in some wonderful Watson Fothergill architecture and the impressive Albert Hall, rich in history and character.

The walk concluded perfectly with a well-earned lunch at Nottingham Contemporary.

A great mix of history, fresh air, and fellowship – many thanks to David for arranging such an enjoyable outing!

Today 6th March one of our members, Joint President David, collected a large donation of clothing from a wholesaler and delivered it to Emmanuel House Support Centre in Nottingham.

The team at Emmanuel House were incredibly grateful for the donation, which will help support people experiencing homelessness and hardship in our city. It’s great to know that items like these will go directly to people who need them most.

During the visit we also had the pleasure of meeting Isabella Harris, the new CEO of Emmanuel House. It was lovely to hear that she was already familiar with Rotary through her previous work, and we look forward to building a strong connection in the future.

In the photo is Emma from Emmanuel House, who was very happy to help us capture the moment for our page.

Thank you to everyone involved in making this donation possible — a small act of kindness that will make a real difference.

On Thursday 5th March, members of Carlton Rotary were delighted to welcome Verity and Jon from Carlton Life Saving Club to speak at our meeting.

We heard about the fantastic work the club does in teaching young people valuable water safety and lifesaving skills. The club provides training and awards for different age groups, helping members build confidence in the water while learning skills that could one day save a life.

It was inspiring to hear how the club encourages young people to get involved, develop teamwork and responsibility, and gain qualifications that can even contribute towards programmes such as Duke of Edinburgh awards.

A big thank you to Verity and Jon for a really interesting and informative talk, and for the great work you do in our community.
