Time for a New Skid Lid?
Crash helmet. Crash hat. Skid lid. Whatever you call it, buying a new one is one of the most important purchases you'll make as a rider... and let's be honest, one of the most expensive too!
The temptation is to choose the one that looks coolest, but comfort and fit should always come first. A poorly fitting helmet can turn a great ride into a miserable one, and it won't offer the best protection if the worst happens.
A few things to consider
✅ Get the fit right
- A new helmet should feel snug all round without creating painful pressure points.
- It shouldn't move excessively when you shake your head, it should move your skin not slide over it.
- Don't assume your old size is still correct. Different brands size differently.
✅ Know your head shape
- Not all heads are created equal!
- Julie has discovered through years of trial and error (and quite a bit of discomfort along the way) that she has an oval-shaped head, and Shoei helmets seem to suit her best.
- Riders with rounder head shapes might find other brands like HJC a better fit.
✅ Look beyond S, M and L
- Many manufacturers offer different thicknesses of internal liners and cheek pads.
- These can make fine adjustments to get that perfect fit without having to move up or down a whole helmet size.
✅ Choose the right style
- Full-face for maximum protection and weather protection.
- Modular/flip-front for convenience and touring.
- Open-face for that classic feel and extra airflow.
- Adventure and dual-sport helmets if your riding takes you off the beaten track.
The best helmet for you is the one that fits your head, your riding style and your budget.
