John Osborne x NSF 👀

If you know TOAST, then you know we LOVE with all our hearts. John’s hilarious, he’s a top bloke and also, Norwich Science Festival is SICK. So yes, we’re endorsing their event, not least because we’ll be there as punters!

A Fear of Whistling with John Osborne
Tue 17 Feb, 7pm, National Centre for Writing
Tickets £12, booking essential via the NSF website. We’ve also linked it in our bio because we’re good boys and girls and

[Alt Text] John Osborne stands in profile on stage at Norwich Theatre Playhouse, reading from a small, colourful book beside a tall microphone stand. He’s wearing a dark blazer, grey jeans and dark lace-up shoes, lit by a warm spotlight against a black background, with fairy lights lining the edge of the stage, a coiled mic cable on the floor and the audience softly lit and just visible in shadow.

TOAST Week at the Playhouse ☕🍞

Norwich Theatre is giving us all a very decent excuse to slow down and actually see the people we keep saying we’ll see. Until 25th January, pop into the Norwich Theatre Playhouse bar for tea or filter coffee with toast for £3.50.

It kicked off on Brew Monday (the Samaritans-led antidote to “Blue Monday”) which feels like a fairly perfect prompt to do something small, warm, and quietly good for your brain. Bring a mate, bring your mum, bring the friend you only ever voice note at 1.5x speed. Sit. Chat. Reset.

And to round off the week, the offer runs all day on Sunday 25 January, which means if you’re coming to TOAST Poetry that evening, you can enjoy a double helping of TOAST with toast. A poetic full circle, frankly.

If you like poetry that’s smart, strange, funny, brutal, gorgeous (sometimes all in the same poem); then it’s time to get yourself acquainted with Caroline Bird.

Caroline is one of the UK’s most exciting poets and her work has that rare mix of craft and wildness; like someone’s taken a scalpel to the everyday and revealed luminosity beneath it.

She published her first collection at fifteen (which is offensively impressive) and has gone on to win major prizes including the Forward Prize for Best Collection. Basically, she’s been casually excellent for decades.

She’s headlining TOAST at Norwich Theatre Playhouse on Sunday 25th January, with a 5pm start, and the whole line-up is genuinely ridiculous in the best way. Caroline, Georgie Jones and Anthony Jospeh... COME ON!!!

Ok. Deep breath everyone. Dr Anthony Joseph is coming to TOAST.

Anthony is one of those artists who doesn’t just write poems, he builds a whole atmosphere. His work is rich, rhythmic, fiercely intelligent and full of that musical energy that makes the room feel different the second he walks on stage.

He’s won huge awards (including the T.S. Eliot Prize) but the main point is: he’s absolutely unreal live. If you like poetry with presence and language that does something to your actual nervous system, this is your moment.

He’s headlining TOAST at the Playhouse on Sunday 25th January, with a 5pm start, alongside Georgie Jones and Caroline Bird.

Wit, warmth and the kind of poems that make you laugh hard... Then stare into the middle distance before you immediately repeat this cycle. Georgie Jones is absolutely fantastic and we cannot wait to have her back on a TOAST stage!

Her poems are funny, tender, properly human and dangerously relatable. She has this rare skill of making the chaos of modern life feel less like a personal failure and more like a shared group project we’re all muddling through together.

Expect big laughs, soft gut-punches and that brilliant post-poetry feeling of being a tiny bit more held by the world.

She’s joining us at the Playhouse on Sunday 25th January with a 5pm start (ideal for the Sunday scaries and still home at a civilised hour). Georgie will also be joining us in The Playroom for books and chats afterwards alongside our other artists.

Calling all the young people.

Please come to our show on 25th January and bring the average age down as Lewis has entered some sort of premature cognitive decline, thanks to his ongoing sleep deprivation.

He’s also got extra mardy, but don’t tell him I said that as he literally won’t even read this caption.

The link and all the stuff you need is in our bio, on the TOAST website and also just, sort of, there, on the internet if you Google it.

Tickets are £11, the start time is 5pm and the lineup is like a Christmas special, by which we mean it’s bloody excellent.

Georgie Jones, Caroline Bird and Anthony Joseph.

Lewis will also be there, but thankfully just in a hosting-facilitating role and not responsible for, I dunno, health and safety, logistics, lights etc!

See you in a few weeks!
