Beat Beat is the UK's eating disorder charity. Contact our Helpline - call 0808 801 0677 or DM us. DMs for support are monitored 3pm to 8 pm Monday to Friday.

Our mission is to end the pain and suffering caused by eating disorders. Eating disorders are serious mental illnesses that ruin and, too often, take lives. Around 1.25 million people in the UK suffer from these illnesses, many in secret. They are of all ages, genders and backgrounds – eating disorders do not discriminate. They steal childhoods, devastate relationships and pull families apart. But

, with the right treatment and support, recovery is possible. Our Helpline encourages and empowers people to get help quickly, because we know the sooner someone starts treatment, the greater their chance of recovery. We listen to them, help them to understand the illness, and support them to take positive steps towards recovery. We also support family and friends, equipping them with essential skills and advice, so they can help their loved ones recover whilst also looking after their own mental health. And we campaign to increase knowledge among healthcare and other relevant professionals, and for better funding for high-quality treatment, so that when people are brave enough to take vital steps towards recovery, the right help is available to them. The work we do means that every year lives are saved, families are kept together, and people are able to live free of eating disorders.

We know that the NHS and its clinicians want to provide the best possible care and never intend to deny treatment to those who need it. Sometimes though, decisions don’t always fully follow the clinical guidelines.

We support the NHS’s commitment to evidence-based care and believe that everyone with an eating disorder should be able to get help at any stage of their illness.

Our advisory service for politicians is our new service, to get your elected representatives involved, and supporting them to overturn decisions using clinical guidelines.

If you have any questions or need any support for your eating disorder, our Helpline is open Monday-Friday 3pm-8pm.

“Eating disorders aren’t just about food or even the way your body looks” 👏👏

Last week, we asked our volunteer content creators what they wish people understood about eating disorders, for . Poetica shares how eating disorders are so much more than eating too much or not enough - and they need to be taken seriously.

Late last week was the announcement of a new cross-government Mental Health Strategy for England.

This strategy marks a long-awaited turning point for those struggling with their mental health. A cross-government approach is desperately needed to tackle the inequalities in care across England, ensuring safe and quality treatment for anyone who needs it.

Most importantly, this strategy must not allow eating disorder provision to lag behind other areas of care. The number of people affected by an eating disorder is growing, yet it also has one of the largest treatment gaps across mental health care. It’s clear that the current system is leading to avoidable and costly hospital admissions and, tragically, to preventable deaths.

Throughout this process, we will ensure the voices of anyone affected by eating disorders are heard and, together, work to achieve real change.

“Your body is not a reflection of your mental state.”

It’s , and we want to spread the word that you can’t spot an eating disorder - and that means you can’t base how well someone is based off of how they look. But, there are signs to look out for, based on people’s behaviours instead.

Amber, one of our content creators, shares how commenting on people’s bodies can actually be harmful for those with eating disorders - and suggests what you could talk about instead 👏👏 What do you want people to know about eating disorders?
