Restorative Justice Council

Restorative Justice Council Promoting quality restorative practice for everyone In criminal justice, it is widely known as restorative justice.

The Restorative Justice Council (RJC) is the independent third sector membership body for the field of restorative practice. It provides quality assurance and a national voice advocating the widespread use of all forms of restorative practice, including restorative justice. The RJC’s vision is of a restorative society where everyone has access to safe, high quality restorative practice wherever an

d whenever it is needed. Restorative practice is effective in building strong relationships and can help prevent and manage conflict in schools, children’s services, workplaces, hospitals, prisons and communities. Restorative justice gives victims the chance to meet or communicate with their offenders to explain the real impact of the crime - it empowers victims by giving them a voice. It also holds offenders to account for what they have done and helps them to take responsibility and make amends. Government research demonstrates that restorative justice provides an 85 per cent victim satisfaction rate, and a 14 per cent reduction in the frequency of reoffending. The RJC's role is to set and champion clear standards for restorative practice. It ensures quality and supports those in the field to build on their capacity and accessibility. At the same time, the RJC raises public awareness and confidence in restorative processes. The ultimate aim of the RJC is to drive take-up and to enable safe, high quality restorative practice to develop and thrive.

What does quality restorative justice look like in practice – and how do we recognise it with confidence?

We’re pleased to share that Northern Ireland Alternatives has been awarded RJC Registered Restorative Organisation status, recognising decades of community-rooted, principled restorative practice in some of the most complex contexts.

This is about more than a badge. It’s about consistency, accountability, and public confidence in restorative justice.

Trust is not repaired by announcements alone. It is shaped by whether people feel seen, respected, and spoken with rather than about.

Every message issued by the system carries weight. For those who have been harmed or marginalised, language can either reinforce distance and defensiveness, or open the possibility of recognition, accountability and repair.

That is why repairing trust requires more than changes to process. It demands leadership that pays attention to how decisions are communicated, whose voices are centred, and whether intent and impact are genuinely aligned with restorative values.

At our upcoming Leaders Summit, we’ll bring together senior voices from across the restorative sector to explore these challenges in depth. Together, we’ll focus on:

- how communication shapes trust and legitimac

- what restorative intent looks like in moments of public scrutiny

- how a national awareness campaign can support more human, accountable communication across criminal justice

This is a space for honest reflection, shared responsibility and forward‑thinking leadership, designed to influence real practice, not just discussion.

Places are limited.

If you are interested in how leadership, messaging and restorative values intersect, and how we collectively do better, we would welcome you to be part of the conversation.

Need restorative support now?

Finding the right help shouldn’t be difficult, especially when someone is ready to take that important first step towards healing, resolution, or understanding.

That’s why we’ve created an easy‑to‑use Restorative Justice Service Map: a simple, accessible tool that lets you pinpoint your nearest restorative provider in seconds. Whether you’re looking for support for yourself, guiding someone in need, or working within a service that wants to signpost restorative options, this map is designed to make the process quick, clear, and stress‑free.

Why it matters

Clear pathways to support: People often don’t know where to begin when seeking restorative help. The map removes confusion and connects individuals to real services—right where they live.

Support when it’s needed most: Restorative practice thrives on timely, human‑centred intervention. Making services easier to find ensures more people can access healing, dialogue, and closure.

Strengthen awareness across communities: By sharing the map, you help others discover restorative options they may not have realised were available locally.

Explore it. Use it. Share it.
